Canceled my delayed Dell 8800GT and NOT getting something else

I went ahead and canceled my delayed dell order for a 8800GT and I am not getting anything in its stead. Why should I really? I already played through bioshock and crysis and the next games to come out that I wanna play are GalCiv2 expansion2, and Universe at war (just came out today I think). Both of which can be maxed out on my 7900GS...


By the time a new intensive game is gonna hit the market the GF9 series will be here and any leftover 8800 series cards will have their price in the gutter (people wouldn't be buying them, since 9 is bigger then 8 it must be much better 😛)

I will have to wait a month or two before going that route though, to make sure it does not expire before the GF9s come out.

But then again, what will I play on it until then? is there some new intensive game coming out soon that I don't know about? Those games usually try to hit the market before the holidays to maximize purchasing.

Bravo! Don't buy into the whole "my life is incomplete if I don't have uber gfx" thing.
 
Heh, I have 8500GT and until two days ago was firmly set on buying G92 8800GTS. Then I thought about it, and paying $350 for a videocard that will be obsolete in 3 months after GF9 comes out isn't such a good deal. I just hope that they will release GF9 in two flavors, GTX for the hard core enthusiasts and GTS for those like me who do not want to spend >=$500 for a video card.
 
That's why I have a x1950pro and I'm happy with it. Unless I really can't play a game I'm interested in with this card, it'll stay on my PCI-E port. Can I play Crysis? Sure, and I don't.
 
Good for you, you will be financially better off for that. I personally can't stand the shuttering in Oblivion, Wic, COD 4, and several other games when I try to run them at 1680x1050 and turn up some of the details. I am sorta counting on the step-up but if the card does not come out in time then it's no big deal since either way the 8800GTS 512 is a HUGE improvement over my 7800GT.

Plus it's a Christmas gift so I am only covering part of the expense, can't complain about that 😉

It's stressful, making the right decision. Like there is one.

I will say this. Despite the huge chunk of change I spent on the GTX when it first came out, it truly changed my fun time on the PC. I was in the middle of Oblivion, totally engrossed in character development but annoyed at being held back.

BAM, add a GTX to the formula and you have a whole different experience. No piece of hardware can be considered an investment. But what made the GTX as close as possible to one was the longevity. One year at max detail on every game out there was amazing.

The problem is we don't have that kind of offering now. The solution, is time, or comprimise. I can't begin to list the games that offer great graphics and gameplay that DO NOT require three hundred dollar graphics cards.

Considering the lack of depreciation (both in money and quality) the 8800GTX was an excellent buy at release. Had I know what I do now I would have bought one the day it came out. But such predictions are normally beyond us, so we have to make guesses.
But normally its a very risky bet to buy top end video cards. They tend to depreciate too quickly.

The step-up time expiration is 90 days after purchase, correct? Does that mean you have to request in 90 days after purchase and then are still able to sit in the queue until a card is available or does everything have to happen before the 90 days are up?

You just have to initiate the process within 90 days from purchase.
