Canadians don't respect the 2nd Amendment

Cliff notes:
1. Man takes wrong turn 'because of faulty GPS' and ends up at Canadian border crossing
2. Asked if he had a gun
3. Says 'nope'
4. Car gets searched. Gun found. Man says he 'forgot' about loaded .380 in center console.
5. Man faces three years in Canadian prison
6. Lawyer says Canadians are unfairly targeting Americans who are trying to carry undeclared weapons into Canada.

Help me out here. . . How does someone forget that they have a loaded handgun in the center console of their car when a border patrol agent asks if they have a gun? And why on God's Green Earth would you think that Canadian laws for gun control would not apply to you in Canada just because you're an American?

I look forward to a reasoned discussion led by the responsible gun owners in this forum.

That man's lawyer sounds like an idiot. When you go another country you are subject to their laws. Even if you are one foot inside their border.

Not unfair,.. especially when you are trying to carry undeclared weapons into Canada.

Solution; stop trying to smuggle guns into Canada.

He did not "forget". He was trying to bring a loaded weapon into another country, without declaring it.

I will wait for the usual suspects to link stories on how a group of thug Canadian dirt bags (re: young and of not white skin) assaulted (re: looked) at a helpless couple (re: drunk/thoughtless couple) and as the Canadian dirt bags were about to rape his wife (re: help her up from tripping over in a drunk stooper), he had his entire head caved in with an iron pipe (re: fell down scraping his forehead slightly).

I think 3 years in a Canukistani hoosegow is a bit exsessive, but obviously US laws don't apply in Canada.

People sometimes make mistakes.

And why on God's Green Earth would you think that Canadian laws for gun control would not apply to you in Canada just because you're an American?
I can't find that in your post or the article. Help me out.

Because the President of the United States has said the US laws shouldn't apply to Mexicans in America :colbert:

So its official, now? Borders and laws matter? Entering someone else's country means obeying *their* laws, not making up your own? No excuses? No free passes?

Just checking.

At the border, DiNatale asked if they could turn around, but was denied.

This is my sticking point with the situation...

Shouldn't they have some sort of provision to turn around?

"I apologize, but we made a wrong turn back there and actually do not wish to enter Canada."

Depends on whether you're the pitcher or the catcher.

you think your second amendment is supposed to still be applicable to you in canada??

bwahahahhahahahahahahahah......

good one honestly good one.

Agreed. But the assumption of many is that the man is a liar. Makes me wonder if they had passports on them. If they did not have passports in their possession, then they clearly made a wrong turn.

Wrong turn, flustered, authorities in my face, making comments denigrating my rights as an American, get angry, but containing anger... Hmm.

Plus, it's far from an isolated occurrence.

According to the Times, nearly 1,400 firearms have been confiscated at Canadian entry points over the last three years, most of them personal guns belonging to U.S. citizens.

You have plenty of time to turn around, signs etc... but once you've hit customs you're IN country. At that point you will never be allowed to just turn round without customs clearing you.

Yeah, we totally agree. Poor choice of a title for the thread. One so wacky, I assumed it wasn't a serious thread.

^ I missed it. Where did anyone actually claim that?

maybe this?

"I told him I was retired military, I had respect for weapons, and I had a concealed carry license to do so," DiNatale explained in a statement. "He asked me when was the last time I had a weapon on me. I told him, 'Earlier that week.' He asked me again, 'Why?' I told him it was my right as an American citizen to do so."

yes he has a carry conceal permit and the gun is properly licensed, but really...who forgets where they put their gun?

You'd think that by the time he saw the signs saying "CANADIAN BORDER" that he'd realize he made a wrong turn...yet he still decides to drive up into Canada....

whats freaking hilarious is, had he remembered where he put his gun and declared it, its only 25 bucks and some paper work to get a 60 day gun permit.

This guy sounds like an idiot. That said, there's no way he'll do 3 years in Canadian prison for this. This stuff happens all the time. It's not in the best interest of the people of Canadia to house, feed & clothe him for 3 years over this.

I missed that point in the article. Please elaborate. What I interpreted from the article was the lawyer was claiming Canadians are going after Americans who are trying to follow Canadian Law just not fully knowledged on the law. It's not an excuse for breaking their laws, but it's a far different point of view than what you interpret it as.

But regardless, someone on a road to a border crossing should have the ability to freely turn around before crossing the border. So the only question I have is, what opportunities does this crossing provide to turn around before crossing?
