Canadians, any good political debate forums?

I don't know of any... I find debating Canadian politics pretty unfruitful, since given our current set of choices, there isn't much to debate except pie in the sky dreaming of a better system for a more representative accountable government.

I need a damn good debate, Harper scares the sh|t out of me, Layton is a pussy, and the Liberals just Fvcking steal our damn money...and have no guilt doing it!!

I dont like the green party guy either, he is way too 'anti-american' to me. Dont get me wrong, i am 'anti-american' at times, but we would be hurtin with out them.

I think i will end up conservative for a few reasons:

1. I live in Alberta, dont wanna be lynched!!

2. We will be in Iraq if we elect Harper, but at least he will put some decent money into the military.

3. I think he will cut the GSt (Lieing goddamn Liberals)

4. Our freaking PM puts a serperatists, non-canadian in the highest honorary role of the government, and he also uses loopholes so he does not have to pay taxes with his companies...Some fvcking Canadian he is!

Many years ago in a previous millenium, I used to debate at the CBC Forums. In 97/98 they changed their forum software around and many of the Posters quit posting there, the new forums just sucked and it was rather difficult to keep track of conversations compared to the previous software. Over the years I've ventured there to try and get some discussion on this type of topic, but the forums seem poorly organized(mostly organized around TV shows and not more general Interests like it used to be organized) so it's dead to me! 😀

Would be nice to find one though.

Anyone been to Canada.com or Canoe to see what they have? I checked out Canada.com once and it seemed dead, but never bothered to see if Canoe has anything.

Probably as fruitful as American Political discussion here! 😀

Dark, you can learn lots about politics by debating them.

For example Statistically Canada wanted to go to Iraq with the US ,if you excluded Quebec , we were actually FOR going to war.
Quebec was rabidly against it over 80% at the time and skewed the results to show a small majority to stay out of the war in public opinion polling
So you are correct, we may have gone to war if Harper was in charge but he would have been representing pretty much the will of Canada less Quebec if we did.
Hindsight is 20/20. . .

Personally I needed time to figure out if Harper was Day part deux. I used to read NCC stuff all the time and found not a lot of common ground, but if you read Harpers Economic papers I'm impressed.
I sort of a fiscal conservative / social progressive, usually its the social issues I find I'm in contradiction with the more hard-core CPC members.

I relize that we were for war. I am saying I dont think that we would like to go now. I think Harper will commit troops to Iraq if he is elected to power. That is the only thing that scares me about him, he is too willing to be a puppet to the american government!

His social policies seem sound, and i LOVE the idea of bolstering the military!

desy, I don't know of any good canadian political forums...MSN groups has one, but is more trolling than anything in my opinion.

I am a social progressive and fiscal conservative and am probably the only Canadian on the forums in support of Harper and the Conservative party. He is a reasonable, intelligent and wise leader and Canada should be so lucky for him to be the next Prime Minister of Canada.

I am willing to debate some of the issues, but I feel like I'd be wasting my time as people who are *scared* of Harper tend not to pay attention to him and have no intention on giving him a chance.

Harper has said on multiple occasions he wouldn't send troops to Iraq. Looking back going to war would have been a bad idea, Martin and his minister of defense (David Pratt) condemned Chretien for NOT going.

Harper is not a puppet to the American government, your claims are unfounded and unreasonable.

CBC News did a short peice with an IT person yesterday, describing each party's web presence. Apparently none of the parties have active blogs and/or forums and their websites generally sucked. Whoever gets a leg up first in terms of the internet could get a nice surprise in votes come election time, imho.

Harper is da debbil!

That is how I feel too...

When Harper announces a GST cut, Liberals refute with:

HAHA, dont believe him, we told u that before and we bullsh1tted you!!

and if you exclude 62% of the american population, Bush has 100% approval rating! But why stop there? If you exclude the germans who don't like nazism, then all germans are Nazis.

I never knew statistics were so much fun.

Wouldn't want to go to a Party forum anyways. Need something more neutral.

A tax cut to the low/middle class is the best way to go and you don't do that by cutting the GST.

Cutting the GST has the biggest effect for whomever spends the most. Low and middle income families are not in that group. Although I'm sure it would help them to some degree.

The problem is that everything seems to be at the expanse of low or middle class families. Corporations leave for Mexico, India and China by the boatload. Another 10 years and Canada will have almost no middle class.

Bio Technology is not going to save Canada regardless of the pipe dream politicians try to shove down our throat.

The bottom line is low and middle class families are loosing ground and loosing it fast and when there's no more money to spend and it's not possible to go any further into debt the economy is going to tank. That's long term.

A short term solution, to the short term tunnel vision of the companies leaving Canada, much like the US, for bigger profits (or to compete to be able to sell to Wal Mart) is to cut income tax on the lower brackets.

It's not going to save Canada but it will buy time. How much depends on how much is cut.

The argument for GST is that it will help corporations remain in Canada to attract new ones. This is largely false.

A few % tax cut to corporate taxes is not even a dent compared to how much they can save if they offshore. Sure it would make Canada more competitive (mostly with the US)but it's like using an ant to try to hold back a dam.

I think we're mostly decided though(not in agreement though. Debates always more fun when you have people to inlfluence(undecided)! 😀

Actually
I read a couple articles today why GST cuts are good
when coupled with reduction in income tax.
GST is still a regressive tax hurting the poor, because of the basic personal exemption they don't pay federal income tax anyway but they will pay the GST. Liberals have been promising to cuts taxes for years but have steadily increased them, why now?
Oh thats right, they are busy buying our votes 🙁
Its also hurts our international competitiveness and a reduction will put us on par with what typical americans pay in sales taxes.
Lowering GST is part of a tax plan and it makes sense when we are having major federal surpluses, which we will continue to have as a net energy exporter.

I'll have to dig it up was a good read

Why anyone believes the whole "Harper is scary" garbage is beyond me. What scares me is the way the Liberals pretend to be the protectors of everything Canadian. "Don't think, we know what's best... for health care, child care..." What astounds me is that you can have a gaffe like the one Scott Reid made and the polls don't blink an eye, but have a picture of Stephen Harper on the news and support for the conservatives plummets (the analogy is a little over the top but I think it highlights the problem quite nicely).

I think desy, we'll just have to make a concerted effort as Canadians to engage in the discussions pertaining to Canada... if we build it they will come. 🙂

You know what's nice is that we can have a discussion about Canadian politics without being trolled! Thanks for the respect, everyone! 🙂

It looks like they got rid of the trolls who used to ravage these threads.

I agree with whoever said we could have a good discussion here.

I'll add my take by saying that I'm voting conservative for the first time in my life. I've always voted liberal and even dabbled with the NDP until now. I read "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand and it influenced the way I look at things. Not only that, but I don't see Harper as the radical most seem to think he is. He announced a $1.2 billion increase in military spending. IMO this is *very* reasonable and our forces surely need the money just to continue to operate at their current levels. His idea to buy transport planes is a very good one.

As for his childcare kickback, I personally see it as tax relief for the wealthy, but since everyone gets the same amount it isn't all that bad. I prefer it over the liberal plan to make the system government run.

As for health care, everyone seems paranoid that we're going with a two-tiered system under the conservatives. I say "so what" and would be interested to see what would happen if they did it. It's not like the NDP couldn't bring it back in 4 years anyway. They say that the best systems in the world are two-tiered (and no, I'm not talking about the American system; I'm referring specifically to countries like Norway, which I might add are extremely socialist).

When it comes to education, the conservatives want to give students a tax break on books. I have heard nothing about what the liberals intend to do, but surely something is better than nothing in this case.

The rest of the campaign is a wash at this point IMO. It's really a shame that the conservatives have such a non-charismatic and unlikeable leader in Harper. The party has great ideas and I think that they would do Canada a world of good right now.

What about all the people who make under the ~$8,000 limit and pay no income tax? They have to pay GST on everything they buy. If there were no GST they would theoretically pay no tax at all. This would include just about everyone on welfare AFAIK. Lotsa poor people. 🙂

$300/year covers 7% of $8,000? That said, good point. 🙂
