Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was found yesterday not to have broken any rules when he asked a Crown corporation to reconsider a loan request by someone in his riding. The person in charge of the investigation (who happened to have been appointed by the PM long ago) ruled that interceding in favour of constituants in one's own circumscription is within the mandate of an elected member of parliament. While new rules may need to be written to avoid ambiguity in the future, none were broken this time.

So Joe Clark and Stockwell Day can shut up their trap and forget their dirty-politics, American-style negative campaign having an effect on all but the more rabid and uneducated part of the Canadian electorate. ;)

Get ready for 4-5 more years of Liberal bliss. :)

Yep
Exonerated by his appointee.
Funny how you can forgive the boss !!
We will have 4 more years of Lberal Gov't its already a forgone conclusion. The 4 after that??
Its also been widely reported that Cretian threw the first rock.
If it gets any tighter they got their media guy sitting on a pile of dirt, the it won't be so "nice" any more
We will see.

Dennilfloss, that still doesn't excuss him of giving millions in aid to other countries while cutting back our own health care. It also doesn't excuse him of not listening to any of the other premiers of the provinces. Dodge one bullet only to be hit by another :)

He is listening to the premiers. When they come up with a proposal that will benefit the nation as a whole, not just their province and a couple of friends, he will probably check how that can be implemented. Sorry if I sound like a strong federalist and a centrist but that's what I am. A monarchist too. :Q And I live in Ottawa to boot. :)

I'm from Quebec. I have seen first hand what evil can arise from giving in to power-hungry provinces.

As for giving millions in International Aid. It's called having a planetary conscience and I am proud that Canada has one and seeks to help less fortunate countries. ;)

Do you also see what comes from not giving provinces the ability to govern themselves?
Cutting of the Education money and Medicare money was brutal.
The Federal Gov't should stick to defence and foreign policies and SOME equlaization payments for IE disasters like the Ice storm and the Manitoba flood or Forest fires or Exxon Valdez an overall economic plan and evironmental policies and regulation that is all.

I agree that those cuts were a horse remedy but unfortunately they were necessary and are in fact more Paul Martin's idea than the PM's...I can't stand Paul Martin. To me he's still too right-wing. Maybe later I'll learn to appreciate his work more.

But now's the time for my nap. :)

Dennilfloss, I agree it is nice to give to charities and help others in need. However it should be done when the needs of your own country/family are taken care of. Also you may have forgot that we are competing with the same countries we are giving aid to. These countries are growing strong off of our hard work. They are using the money to grow stronger while we get weaker by giving it away.

One million Canadian children living in poverty because of Liberal cuts to welfare and unemployment.
The highest % of people on welfare are single mothers who are there because there is no national childcare or decent mass transit that would allow them the opportunies to look for meaningful work.
There seems to be lots and lots of money for poorly drated ineffective gun control though.

dennilfloss - good to see that us Canadians can going over politics as well <grin>.

I can't vote in Canada anymore (been out of the country too long with no current intention of going back). I grew up as an Anglophone in Quebec and the Liberals will never be my Federal Party of choice. Unforunately, it is them or the PQ/Bloc and I love Canada more than I dislike the Liberals. At least the have some (a tiny bit) fiscal responsibility now.
