OTTAWA - Jean Chrétien drew applause and a few whoops of joy at a fundraising dinner Tuesday night when he said that legislation decriminalizing possession of marijuana in Canada would soon be announced.

"Don't start to smoke yet," he quickly cautioned the celebrants in the audience.

"We're not legalizing it, we're decriminalizing," said Chrétien who points out he has never smoked a joint.

The Criminal Code amendments, expected to be introduced in the Commons within the next two months, will make possession of small amounts of pot a minor offence that would be treated something like a traffic violation.

so can we smoke it while driving?

To Americans: If this passes and you support it, then move to Canada rather than trying to decriminalize it here.

"So you will have another ticket," said Chrétien, "for losing your senses, or something like that."
*covers his eyes in embarassment*

Welcome to mars, where idiots live.

For every 1 scientific article that says that isn't not harmful, there are 10 that say it is harmful (numbers are estimated). This has been discussed at length. I will not discuss it anymore, nor post anymore links to proof or sources because I've done it many times before and you would just continue believing what you want to believe. Thus, have fun living your life in ignorance and not harming your body (according to you) by ingesting carninagens and toxic substances.

It is harmful. How can sucking some substance into your lungs NOT be harmful?

I'm all for legalizing pot. Heck, if you want to damage your own lungs then I believe you have every right to do so. But saying it isn't harmful is just plain ignorant.

Xzero: would you be willing to provide 10 articles that say it is harmful for every 1 we can find?

I agree, but we really need to get off the "damage" aspect of it, because that is obviously NOT why it's against the law.

Is it harmful enough to warrant arresting users? Is it your decision whether or not I hurt my lungs? Is it your decision to put me in jail for the rest of my life because I grew a plant which has, as long as anyone can remember, existed? How can we throw people in jail for owning a certain type of plant? Is that freedom?

As long as a substance isn't addictive and immediately life threatening, I say it should not be the government's decision as to whether or not people have access to it. And before calling someone an idiot, please do provide proof to back up your statement instead of acting like you're too good to discuss it.

its is harmful but half the things in the world arent good for you.

I considering pot and drinking on the same level...

Decriminalizing it wont make us like the next mexico it'll help speed up our court system allowing for faster trials and more meaningful cases...

Hopefully you dont follow bush's war on drugs. Because if you want to get rid of drugs u dont arrest people you help the people... He's putting too much money into trying to stop it rather then treat the problem.

while it is plainly harmful to your health, i mean come on, its smoke, i've read a good share of articles that say that it's not damaging to your intelligence in the long run... granted, while under the influence, and in the weeks surrounding your usage, u want be on your A game, it wont make you permanantly stupid... thus, if used only occasionally, it truly isn't that bad for your health, just don't take it up as an everyday thing

but back on track... that's cool that canada is taking these steps; its not the governments job to tell us how to live our personal lives... smoking pot in the comfort of your own home does no more damage than getting drunk in your own home.

Government must step in to stop a bunch of idiots from harming themselves. (This is how many current drug laws are set up.) Up to which point though, that is the deeper issue of the MJ debate.

They have to keep the youth from moving to the US somehow, this just might be the ticket. Everyone who lives in Cananda and now everyone who visists Canada will become too fat and lazy to leave thereby doubling their number in 5 years. They are stealing our kids

You're too late by 20+ years. Similar decriminalization already exists in at least 2 states, Oregon and Alaska.

I'm not sure if you're supporting the idea that the government must stop a "bunch of idiots," but if you are, where does it stop? Should we outlaw fatty foods because over 30% of our population is overweight? Should we outlaw skiing because it is life threatening?
