Canadian ID?

I'm in NY now but I'll be in Toronto in a couple of weeks. What's the quickest way to obtain a government-issued ID when I get there? I need one to play on Partypoker while I'm there (they require a scan of a non-American ID).

Is anyone familiar with the process of getting a driver's license (or a simple ID card) at the Canadian DMV? I can't seem to find any documentation on this on Google. I know when I was living in California, I just had to show the DMV my NYS license and take a short test to get a DL. Anyone know if it's the same or similar?
 
well you'll need a Canadian address, proof of birth (birth certificate), and well - be a citizen to get a Canadian ID.

Link to Ontario ministry of Transportation (notice it does not apply to US drivers as they do not need to obtain an Ontario license for 3 months after their arrival, at which time you would need to provide the documentation of address or residency)

Other than that, acceptable legal proof of identification is a passport w/ photo.
I don't know what this site will require as it may not have as stringent requirements. You can look into obtaining a BYID card from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario here.

Good luck obtaining an ID without a permanent address; I've lived in Ontario for 23 years - every government ID document has been mailed to me; without exception.
 
the LCBO is a Crown Corporation under the control of the Government of Ontario. The BYID card is accepted only in LCBO stores as proof of age to purchase beer and liquor. You cannot use the BYID card in any other province, nor to purchase cigarettes, lottery tickets, porn, or even get into a bar (YMMV on the last one though)

Again, your website might not be as stringent as to the requirements and jurisdiction of said ID.

Okay, thanks for your help. I don't think that card will be sufficient, and even if it were, I don't know anyone who qualifies as a guarantor. It looks like my only option right now is to apply for a Permanent Resident's card (I think).
 
I have several other reasons but poker is the main priority. It's my main source of income and living in Canada will greatly affect how much I will be able to earn.
 
Welcome. Yea, you can get your PR card.. from there you can get your Driver's ID, health card and so on...

You should look into the poker thing before you move. My friend used to support himself playing online poker but isn't able to now that the Americans don't play anymore.

Thanks. I was browsing through the CIC website and saw forms to apply for Temporary Residence but I don't think I get an ID card for that... do I?

you are misunderstanding.. we live in Canada, the online poker industry doesn't pay out like it used to now that Americans don't play.
