I do, among other things, sports for our station. There is a team called the Canucks. I said it like this:

"Caa-nux"

So my senile boss' even more senile wife tells me that it's

"Can-oooooks".

I just stare at her and say "what?". She proceeded to tell me that I mispronounced it. I told her that I listen to 6 hours of sports radio every day and they always say it like I did. My boss then tells me that everyone from ESPN (which we carry, by the way) is an idiot and none of them are from Canada. I told him neither was he.

So, which is it my friends?

Edit: Don't skew my poll, damnit! I'm going to show this to my boss.

Canadian hockey fans? Are there any other kind of hockey fans? Hahahah!

I've always heard it pronounced Ca-nucks. It's short for Canadian Neffer, or something like that. ;)

Sorry, both hockey and Canada are alien to me. I don't know anything about either one. Other than I have to look out for ties in the hockey games when I read the list of winners.

:)

CA-NUX.

Take the CA sound from the start of the word CANADA, and then add an N and then the UCKS sound from the word F*CKS and you have CA-NUCKS.

That's what I said. She's also the person who thinks that we should make our top-rated Oldies station an All Commercials Radio Station. She's crazy.

Yep..I've been watching NHL hockey for about 19 years now. I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

General rule of thumb: a vowel that precedes a single consonant is pronounced "long"
a vowel that prededes a double consonant is pronounced "short"

Example: Apple
Maple

And that is your english lesson for today! Now tell your boss to write 100 times "I will never mispronounce Canucks again!"

I'm tempted to call the Canucks PR guy on speaker phone and ask him (or her as the case may be). Then I might throw in "So if someone says Canooooks, they'd be an idiot and need to be institutionalized, correct?". I'd like to see what my bosses wife does when she hears him say yes.

She got so mad that she passed out when someone changed one word in our horrible, horrible weather copy.

She quintiples the stress level here.
