Under the new rules, Canadians caught with less than 15 grams of the drug will receive fines that will vary depending on the amount they are found with. Certain aggravating factors ? such as whether people caught with marijuana are near a school, driving a vehicle or committing another offence ? can further increase the penalties.
For amounts between 15 and 30 grams, it will be up to the police officer's discretion whether to issue a ticket or make an arrest.
"Sanctions are [now] disproportionate," Justice Minister Martin Cauchon told an Ottawa news conference. "The legislation which I introduced today will ensure that the punishment fits the offence."

about damn time.

Thank you, Canada. I hope all our dopers and potheads move to your country and take all the problems they create with them.

I will agree drugs are bad, but I would rather fine pot smokers than to pay to throw them in jail.

I'd like to see a news story about a doper/pothead who caused some problems around here. Other than still living with their parents or bogarting their friend's burrito.

It's not worth the trouble for porting 14.99999g of MJ. The most common problem caused by these people is a shortage of Cheetos.

Ya, this proposed law really isn't much different from what has been the practice in some areas for a long time. It certainly is not as revolutionary as what the Senators recommended, full legalization. What really surprises me most about these proposals is the continued pressure from the US Federal government, the law softens on small volume possession, but toughens on large volume and grow-ops.

You're right. Damn right. In fact, I think that we should lock up all those dime-baggers for at least 20 years, even if it means that a rapist or a murderer has to be released early.
Oh... wait. We already do that.

The proposed change improves little. They decrim small amounts, but they'll crack down on growing or selling (14 years!!, at is, if any court would actually do that in this country). Its only going to make matters worse from every perspective.

They should have followed the Senate recommendations and legalized it outright. There is only ONE reason why they don't, the "good old" USofA and its band of fascist dictators.

And then I would like to present this case to the government (both Canada's and the US).
