11-3-2004 Unhappy Democrats Need to Wait to Get Into Canada

OTTAWA - Disgruntled Democrats seeking a safe Canadian haven after President Bush won Tuesday's election should not pack their bags just yet.

Canadian officials made clear on Wednesday that any U.S. citizens so fed up with Bush that they want to make a fresh start up north would have to stand in line like any other would-be immigrants -- a wait that can take up to a year.

Anybody who enters Canada who claims refugee status will be provided with a work permit ... it doesn't matter what country they're from"

Umm Yeah the auto manufacturing moved south all the way to Mexico. Funny both UPS and Fedex delivery packages all the way up new york. I also can buy coke.

The blue states are subsidizing from the red states. Its a fact. I'm sick of hearing about how the red states don't like government and want them out of their lives when they are the biggest welfare whores. They would be even poorer if it wasn't for the blue states. If the Blue states split into a different country, the red states would be like Africa.

I find it kind of odd that there would be enough people to actually have the Canadian govenment issue a statement like that. Well, if they find a job up there. Good for them I guess.

I've been to Canada a few times, and met alot of great people there. Their customs and border people are real crotchety though, a throwback to the KGB days......

Winners and losers

Currently taxpayers in North Dakota benefit most from the give-and-take with Uncle Sam, receiving $2.03 for every dollar in taxes. New Jersey benefits least, receiving just 62¢ per federal tax dollar.

Other states that receive little spending per dollar of federal tax are Connecticut (64¢), New Hampshire (68¢), Nevada (73¢), Minnesota (77¢) and Illinois (77¢).

Though not comparable as a state, the District of Columbia is by far the biggest beneficiary of federal spending, receiving $6.17 for every federal tax dollar?more than nine times the national average.

What affects the rankings?

One factor affecting rankings is that federal spending on defense and other procurement dollars are often funneled to the states of powerful members of congress. Also, state governments can grab more federal grant money by manipulating their spending to comply with federal regulations.

Another factor is demography. States with more residents on Social Security, Medicare and other federal entitlements tend to rank high. Similarly, high spending levels in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia are explained by the predominance of federal employees.

Finally, states with higher incomes per capita?such as Connecticut?pay higher federal taxes per capita thanks to the income tax's progressive structure, which increases federal taxes per dollar of federal spending received in return.

Welfare is an overall small portion of federal entitlements. Nice try at spin though.

btw, if the red states withdrew, you still haven't mentioned how you'd feed yourself properly. I guess all those extra tax dollars, plus more, could go to importing food instead?

I'd think that he would be right though about the GDP...California itself is one of the world's largest economies.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Atlanta itself was more towards Kerry. What county is it in?

Government spending does not mean government spending on the state. I would be happy to discuss this in relation to pork alone, but when you cite statistics that include military spending you ignore the context.

So, excluding services that provide for the entire nation (military, national offices in D.C., etc), how does the breakdown look?
