OTTAWA—The Senate has approved the Trudeau government’s landmark legislation to lift Canada’s 95-year-old prohibition on recreational cannabis — but with nearly four dozen amendments that the government may not entirely accept.

Bill C-45 has passed in the upper house by a vote of 56-30 with one abstention, over the objections of Conservative senators who remain resolutely opposed.

Congrats to you Canadians! I'm interested to see what the amendments are. I expect the US to follow within the decade. Times are changing. If you're interested in this, or want to follow it some more, some good references:

It wasn't already legal? When I was biking around Vancouver I saw/smelled people smoking it all over the place, especially every beach I passed.

My state better get cracking on this since I’ll be needing some by the time we hit Ivanka’s 3rd term as president.

I see no problem with this. Gets the criminal element out of distribution and product can be properly sold, legally, and taxed.
I've got a childhood friend who runs a successful pot farming business in Spokane, Wa. Even after doing prison time for being a cocaine king pin, he still got a license. Google Cip Paulsen.

The only problem I see is if the individual provinces or territories ban growing your own. That's what big money growers want and potential big pharma. Once the big $$ gets in they start writing the laws. This is why I like the Wash DC version, no sales except for medical but you can grow your own and give to friends. That to me is the spirit of the green wave.

Not everybody can grow their own but the option needs to be there for an honest market. It's important to have a legal retail channel for those who can't. Otherwise black market providers will meet the demand.

Well not everyone but a lot can and I guess my point was growing your own needs to be part of any legalization anywhere while with canada I think I read it's up to the provinces/territories? It's like saying you can't grow your own tomatoes.

And back to the point of growing, all you need is a 2 foot square piece of dirt outside or some cheap CFL lights, soil a timer and an empty closet or even a cardboard box and you can grow some damn good weed in your own house or apartment. Well you do need some seeds.

I thought this would trigger a little more activity here at work. Usually any time there's a development on weed trading volumes on weed stocks go up. So far it's been quiet on the trade floor...
