Canadian prime minister to step down in '04
Support waning, Chretien says he won't seek 4th term 'to bring back unity' to Liberal Party
TORONTO -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien said today he will not seek a fourth term and will leave office in February 2004.
The announcement at a hastily arranged news conference came at a Liberal Party caucus meeting in Quebec, where Chretien faced calls by supporters of rival Paul Martin to state clearly if he would run for a fourth consecutive term in an election that must take place by the end of 2005.
Chretien said he needed more time to complete his agenda for the government, and would leave office in February 2004.
"At that time my work will be completed and my successor will be chosen," he said. "I will not run again."

My initial reaction: Great! Most significant political event this decade for Canadians. Getting Martin in the country's top chair would be fantastic for this country, IMHO.
My second reaction: Crap. I don't want to wait all the way to 2004...
