Exactly, I wouldn't work for a place that cannot trust me on what I'm supposed to be doing while under the clock. I'd seek better opportunities/working conditons ASAP. D:
 
That list doesn't sound terrible. Show up on time and work? The horror! I've never had a job that wouldn't fire you for being late more than 36 times a year and I'm union.

I couldn't make it. Hell, I had a micromanaging prick supervisor over the summer and printed out a resignation letter twice. Left it on my desk over a weekend too for shits and giggles. I had to work with him for a few months, and in the last 2 months, his "nice" facade disappeared and I got to experience:

- Having to draw up a detailed schedule of exactly what I was working on for a month.
- Had the schedule shit on, was accused of being slow and/or incompetent over the phone even though email was preferred and more effective.
- Forced me to work out of his office in another town over (1 to 1.5 hour drive away -- yep, in a hurry, so let's waste 2 productive hours a day) when I could do everything at my home office.
- Checked up on me multiple times a day at his office, and checked up regularly when I was back home.
- To top it off, the fucker made me do a presentation of the project infront of about 20 people with 15 minutes to show time. With the pattern above, I can't help but feel he was trying to humiliate me. Luckily, his dumb ass didn't know I winged 95% of all my school presentations and got good at it.
 
i think most people are most productive when they are encouraged to feel confident. i guess the best advice is to get a job where your coworkers work hard. if youre in a place where everybody jerks off all day, a. you will be ostracized for your work ethic. and b. youll get this kinda bullshit micromanagement.

get a new job.
 
You guys laugh but there actually are managers that micromanage to that extent. But yeah it does feel like being in elementary school.

My new boss is an asshole. If you make certain suggestions or ask why something was done a certain way, he won't explain it -- he'll draw an org chart and say "You're down here and I'm up here. That's why." He'll say "fuck" in nearly every conversation with employees and backstabs some employees to others (the help desk reports to him and he told some of us that they were incompetent dicks). He'll also throw out "firing" people on occasion and while I think he might be joking, it isn't funny. He just likes to intimidate people.

This behavior, of course, is completely contrary to what we all were told would be the qualities they'd look for in a new manager. How do I know that? Because I applied for that position and was told that by his boss and his bosses' boss.

What am I going to do about it? At the moment, keep collecting my paycheck. Once I hit full retirement vest in May, then I'll move on if he hasn't improved. That's really all you can do and I'd advise the OP that if the employee doesn't like it, start looking. For those of you saying I should go over his head and complain, I don't think it would do any good but I may go ahead and do it just to make him sweat a little once I vest. The fish stinks from the head down so I am not sure anything would be done but I know if it got back to our HR department, it would be very uncomfortable for him for a few weeks at least. 😀

I'd probably be able to do that for about four hours before I went into the CEO's office to tell him what a terrible workplace he had there.

Life is too short to "tough it out" unless it's a situation like IndyColtsFan's where you're very close to a major payday being assured. I have confidence that the skills I offer an organization warrant me the respect of a professional, and I'm happy to go elsewhere if the organization disagrees. I don't quite comprehend what people think they're proving by saying they have what it takes to take this particular flavour of abuse.

That's about the most idiotic approach to manage I've ever heard of. Dale Carnegie would slap that person.

Yes, it is very poor management. "Because I said so" should only be used as an extreme last resort and generally only in emergency situations. Otherwise, a manager should take the time to explain the decision to his/her employees to help them understand the decision and maybe learn from it.
