Can you verify if you got Venice core on an Athlon 64 3000+?

Funny story, I walked in computer shop to help my brother select a computer. Anyway, my brother was almost ready to select anything. I nearly crapped my pants when he insisted he wanted the Pentium 2.4 GHz and an FX graphic card. I stepped between him and the salesman and asked if he could get a socket 939 mobo. Then I asked him if he could choose either Abit, Asus, DFI or MSI. He said OK to MSI. It took a while to convinced my brother to accept buying an Athlon 64 3000+ and a 6600 GT. Anyway, it's done, he has a MSI K8N Neo4 and MSI 6600 GT 128 MB.

But, out of curiosity, I wanted to know if you could tell if he has a Venice core. Also, would 420 watts be too puny to overclock? He has 3 hard drives (two from his old machine, he also refuses to re-format them).

And if anyone knows anything about that mobo, has anyone here succeeded in getting the sound to work?

ADA3xxx AWBOX = NewCastle
ADA3xxx ASBOX = Clawhammer
ADA3xxx BIBOX = Winchester
ADA3xxx BPBOX = Venice
ADA3xxx BNBOX = San Diego

Correct if I am wrong, but does that board have the D.O.T? Dynamic over clocking tech? If so, my friend got it up to 6% before his corsair value select ram started giving him errors. Also you may need a bios update, the bios reported the CPU temp 10c too hot for my friend, until he got the update. Is the 420 watt power supply the peak power or the constant?

I have no idea if the PSU's power supply is constant or peak power. How much of a difference would that make?

BTW, thanks for all the replies.

Give us the amperages for each rail on the PSU, that's a much better indicator of quality than an arbitrary wattage rating.

Well, I might take some time to get that information. He just got his computer today and he was visibly upset and raised his voice several times while I spoke to him. He has schizophrenia (for real) so I want to give him a few days to cool off.

You can laugh at his condition if you want, but LOL, sometimes it's a little "difficult" to deal with him.

Make sure that u have more than 21amp in 12V rail, s939 and 600gt in combination is quite power hungry and you will face nonsense lock ups from time to time if you try to be cheap under PSU ategory. I am feeling the heat right now with my Antec 350w PSU (max output is 450w btw). Just my $0.02.

If the computer starts to lock up or restart under heavy load, then the power supply might be too weak. If it works just fine then i would leave it alone. I have a habbit of fixing things that aren't broke.🙂

Just tell us the brand of the PSU.

What would that do? Sure we would know the quality, but if its a 200W PC Power & Cooling PSU or, lets say a 400W no name brand, what would you choose?
