The ability to pickup an uncooked grain of rice is just about as useless as the ability to lick your nostril, however it is not difficult to do with small pointy chopsticks.Originally posted by: Vegitto
I can pick up a single grain of rice with my chopsticks.. I hate sushi, though..
By the way, that single grain of rice, is it cooked or uncooked?

When your hands relaxed the chopsticks should be parallel to each others instead of crossing each others.Originally posted by: aidanjm

<-- Viet, not too bad, and normally cross my chop sticks & still can cut noodles this way. I can use it uncross like others, however it feel uncomfortable to me. And, my Chinese GF make fun of me for crossing my chop sticks.
for those of us who aren't in the know, what is this "crossing chopsticks" thing?
Chopsticks snobs think that their way is the only way to hold chopsticks. IMHO, as long as you can pickup the food and shovel it into your mouth you are doing fine.
QFT - food in mouth = good
lol, but crossing the chopsticks sucks. it sucks because you can't execute too much power, nor can you have superior control. it doesn't look proper too. it's kind of analagous to how some people hold their forks/spoons w/ their palms facing down, w/ the shaft of the fork/spoon popping out of the thumb area of a clenched fist.

Picking up a single grain of rice is easy. I've never used chopsticks meant to pick up a single grain of sand, so I've never tried. Never tried eating sand

Why would I eat sand?

sushi? some japanese people would argue that you should eat sushi with your hands.
ah here we go
* Clean your hands by an oshibori (hot towel) then order a drink.
* Green tea (called agari in sushi restaurants) is the best drink with sushi.
* You can order a set of sushi with a fixed price or order your favorite sushi pieces as you eat.
* It's nice to ask the sushi chef for his/her recommendation of the day.
* If you are not ordering a set of sushi, it is better to order a few kinds of sushi at a time, instead of ordering a lot.
* Put soy sauce for dipping in the small dish provided.
* To eat sushi, it's common to use your fingers.
* When dipping sushi in the soy sauce, do not dip whole sushi. Just dip the end of the sushi as you eat.
* Try not to ask the sushi chef to bring you things - like a drink or your bill.
* It's nice to offer to buy your sushi chef a drink if he/she is doing a good job.
ps, i'm not japanese, so i rarely use my fingers for sushi.
