Can you use an external hard drive to install your OS on?

My 74GB raptor died today. I already set up the RMA yesterday but it'll be a few days before it arrives. I was thinking about getting an external drive anyways. So, could I install vista on the external hard drive (esata, btw), then when the raptor arrives just ghost/clone the image over to the 74GB drive?

Seems logical but I've never heard of anyone using external drive as OS drive.

Would work just fine w/ eSATA.

I've done that before.

So you imaged the external drive over to another drive? If so, what program did you use?

I'm installing vista ultimate 64 btw.

Sorry, i meant i installed it on an external.

I haven't bothered with imaging for years.

Used to use Acronis True Image...i imagine it'd work fine for moving the entire OS to the new HDD.
