Can you use a PS2 controller/joystick on a PS3?

my shitty 40gb doesn't have any external controller ports, only usb ports.. I do have a usb to dual shock2 adapter, but i've never tried it with my ps3... might work.. probably not though.

edit: pretty bad ass arcade stick you've got there! if you uh.. send it to me I'll let you know if it works with my adapter :laugh:

There are a few adapters that work lag free, and a lot that suck. Check the shoryuken.com forums for the best adapters, one is a discontinued Pelican adapter, hard to find, the other is a REAL brand adapter.

Yeah, this thing was $240 at some sites. But it's only $94 in Japan.

I just got this in the mail. Works for SF4 on PS3 and using a custom joystick with a ps2 controller PCB in it.

I actually got it off amazon where eforcity is selling the item there for less than the page I initially linked.

EDIT: Link wouldn't show up, but clicking "new" will show you they are selling for 3.03

That adapter may work, but I doubt it's input lag free. People are willing to pay $30-50 for quality adapters with no input lag. If you don't play at a high level I suppose it doesn't matter, but if you're serious about the game spend the extra money for something reputable.
