You can upgrade your CDRWs firmware so that it is able to utilize 80 min cds...

you can burn to them ... if you dont upgrade firmware ... you probably wont be able to burn them at 700mb if it does not support them ...

how fast is the drive ???

I had a 2x drive from 1998 that sucked ... no DAO, no RAW, no a lot of things, but it was still able to burn 700mb cds ....

you should be able to do so ...

Alot of current CDRW drives do not officially support 80min CDR's. They can still write to them but not the full 80 min. They can fill about 78 or 79 minutes on an 80 min CDR. You are just gonna have to experiment. If you wanna see what type/brand you have go to control panel->system->device manager->cdrom. If you want to see if a firmware update is available you can look here.

No you can't. My 5 year old Sony can't do 700MB CDRs. 650MB CDRs are getting hard to find, and 700MB are so cheap, that sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to get a new CDR than continue buying 650MB CDRs.

I don't know about the drives - although if a drive can read a 80-minute CD, I don't see why it couldn't record one as well. But in both my systems, all I needed to do was upgrade the Easy CD Creator from 3.1 to version 3.5c, and voila, I can burn 80 minute CD's.
Now, it's true, I've never tried to record exactly 80 minutes, but I recorded as much as 79.35... the program counts two seconds of silence between tracks, even if you record Disk-at-Once, so I had to make everything fit in 80 minutes.

In case you're wondering, I have two HP burners - the 7200i and the 8250i. Never had a proble with them. And the 7200 is really old-school, around spring of 1998, so how much older can yours be, since Compaq only started packing recorders in its units in the fall of that year?
