Can you use 16x media in a 24x burner?

I don't know, that's why I'm asking. My GF bought a 100-spindle of 16x CDRs. She doesn't have a burner yet, but w/the prices these days, I'll be getting her a 24x burner.

Can I successfully use the 16x media in a 24x burner? Thanks much.

ps
I have a 12x burner...behind the times. 😱

You can...but it may fail depending on the quality/brand of the cd. I burn all my media at 24x in my lite-on regardless of the rated speed for the CDR. I mostly use 12x memorex and they burn fine at 24.

I had a lite-on 24x and it burned my PNY 16x media @ 24x without a problem. I burned eight 700 MB discs in a row the first day I installed it and not one problem. Of course my lite-on died within 2 months of getting it but that's a different story.

Thanks guys. When she gets her burner, we'll give 24x a shot. If not, we'll just back off to 16x. She'll get upset (what else is new?) b/c she wont' understand WHY we can't burn 16x media @ 24x. I'll just tell her "just because, honey, that's why." 🙂
