My friend thinks that he has fried his mobo. He wants to know if he can try to power up the mobo without a cpu and see if it beeps for an error. Would this damage his board if it isn't already fried or any other components such as his hdd, cd-drive, psu, etc?

How would it damage the board?

There should be a series of beep codes for failing to detect a CPU. I'm not sure about causing any damage though.

should not damage anything,if you get the proper beep code for cpu you know the mobo is good to the cpu at least.could still have damaged traces to, say vid card.Just do minimum install, cpu, mem, and vid card.Preferably outside the case.
