I have a 19" CTX monitor that has served me well. I think it is going out on me. I keep hearing a click and when that happens the screen refreshes. I was thinking of going to a LCD monitor. I do play games but I hear they are better now. What do you think/ Also would a 17" lcd monitor have a screen as large as my 19"CRT? Thanks for your help and opinions

You're 19" CRT would have just over 18" viewable area.

Therefore, a 17" LCD will have less area than your CRT. For size-for-size comparison, an 18.1" LCD will be about the same size. And of course, a 19" will be bigger :)

If you are wanting to play games, you will want at most a 25ms refresh time, with 16ms preferable. Also, you must run an LCD monitor in it's native resolution, otherwise it will look rubbish and blurry!

Not quite. The advertised size of an LCD is the same as the viewable size, but the viewable size for a CRT is always slightly less than the advertised size since some of the screen is hidden behind the bezel. Most 19" CRTs have a viewable size of about 18", so the image from a 17" LCD would be about 1" smaller.

Pesonally, I still think CRTs are superior to LCDs for gaming, but if you're determined to have an LCD get one with a response time of, at the most, 25ms.

The 17" LCD is larger than a 17" crt and smaller than a 19"crt. I just switched from a 19" crt to the Viewsonic Vp171B which is 16ms. It looks just as nice as the G400 it replaced. It shows no ghosting using the utility from monitorsdirect. It also takes up a lot less space which is so nice. I think you will be very happy with a good LCD.

I play mainly racing games and some first person shooters. I guess a major consideration is the fact that lcd monitors run at just one resolutoin, Any comments on that or anything else? I really appreciate your time!!!

the single resolution is not too much of a problem if your video card can handle running all your games at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 (for larger screens) :p

I have a geforce 4 4200 so i guess the only problem will be when games like doom come out.

The whole native resolution thing is getting a bit distorted here. In Windows, yes, if you go below your native res, it looks like crap. It gets pretty blurry. In games, this isn't that much of a problem unless you are playing a slow moving game say like Sim City 4. In something like UT2003 you will not really notice the difference. This is of course if you are only dropping it down one step, say form 1280x1024 to 1024x768. It would be more noticable dropping lower though. My panels are 1280x1024 native. I have played a bunch of games at 1024x768 and they look fine.
