take a careful look at the pins and the socket, see if there are any burn marks.

My friend accidentally fired up the computer with CPU without heatsink.

Thus, the question. :(

What kind of CPU was it? If it was an Athlon, then it probably is burnt :( But if its an Intel, I think you might be safe. Try putting the heatsink on it and running it. If it works then it didn't burn :)

"My friend accidentally fired up the computer with CPU without heatsink."

Doesn't sound like much of a friend.

I prefer the "Rice Crispies" method:

1. If it goes SNAP, when you are installing the giant oversized heatsink to run it 500 MHz out of spec, you killed your CPU.
2. If it goes CRACKLE, when you mercilessly increase the voltage, because you are pissed that your 1GHz CPU won't QUITE do 1.5GHz, this is also a sign that he is on his way out.
3. If it goes POP, and a thick black vapor starts coming out of it, you guessed it, it is probably dead.

If the "Rice Crispies" method doesn't work for you, look for black dots on the bottom, system not booting up when the chip is installed on multiple motherboards, obvious visible cracks in the middle of the core, fire coming out of sides or back of your case, and of course, the ever present smoke.

If the above applies to you, don't dispair. Congratulations on your very cool $150 keychain!

Of course, if NONE of this does it for you, you can always revert back to the always popular "it doesn't work now" method. ;)

Well, unless you dipped your case in hot oil, I think that it would be very hard to fry your chip with it still on the motherboard.
So I think that you are good unless you fried it before putting it on.
Hm.... I wonder how good that is, 'fried Tbird'

OH! You meant that kind of frying!
Whops.... sorry.

if you know the rest of the comp works properly, pop another cpu in and see if it boots, then you'll know for sure

Of couse this time make sure you have a hs/f on it. Why would your friend even want to attempt to run a fcpga processor through a ppga slot?

He wasn't sure if the slocket was compatible with the cpu so he decided to test it.
