no and I've taken zero time off in the last year (the PTO cashout check is going to be nice though)

due to other events it looks unlikely that I can take any time for at least 6 more months

At the job I'm working right now, yeah, no problem. I start a new one tomorrow so we'll see about that one.

What's a day off :p

This thread is funny because I just came home from work after going in for an hour with my sick child tagging along. Now that I'm home I got a call from my sister telling me she is staying home today so I can go to work (she works where I do, I'm her boss). I don't know if my boss put her up to it or not, but I hope he made it worth her while if he did.

I like responsibility, but it sucks when I can never leave or be sick. If I do have to take a day off, all of my work is waiting for me when I get back. Unfortunatly my wife's work is the same way, but at least she's not on call on the weekend.

Wow, if your are easily covered if you took the day off then you are easily covered if they have lay offs.

i am unique, there are many essential things that only i can do, so no one can "cover" for me

when i take days off, i still check my email and have my cell phone with me if someone needs me

but most of the time my duties are not time critical, i can do them the next day or get them done before i take a day off

No.

Same here for about 45 people, 4 servers, phone system, etc. One day off usually doesn't hurt too bad, I just have a lot of catchup to do the next day. Fortunately though, my company also has a programmer who is a tech also so he can pick up some of my slack if the need arises. Plus, a day off every now and then shows the higher ups what would happen WITHOUT me here, like I said, I usually have a lot of catchup work the next day.

Not true in my case... I'm usually the only one working on a project, but the due date for the project may be weeks or even months away. As long as I get it done by the deadline, I could take off without anyone covering...

In fact it wouldn't do much good for someone to cover, it would take them at least half the day if not the whole day just to come up to speed on the project in order to take over.... and some projects it would take much much more than a day to catch up.

Yay for software development :)

Well, the poll is useless since many people probably answered based on the topic title, rather than the question. The only clue were the emoticons.

For me, as long as I do not have something scheduled or something due, I can take off without coverage. But, I still need to make my billing at the end of the month.

No.

There is generally two people in town who can cover. They are not on call, so if they say no to the OT they don't have to come in. Also, if someone is on leave then there is only one person available. This makes a high chance of no relief available.

The guy already on shift would then have to work a 16 hour shift.

Yes and no.

If I take a day off work, there is no one who "covers" for me. No one does my job. And as long as there aren't any problems, that's fine.

But if there is a problem that I would normally handle, there really isn't anyone else who can handle it. So if it's urgent, they'll call me.

Nope, can't call in sick either. Unless I need to be in a hospital or in the ground I have to be there. :(

Nope, only because the person that backs me up stinks as a sysadmin, but my boss thinks otherwise.

Worked 4 years in a place I needed coverage. We went through layoffs and time off got to be a problem.
i called in sick one day and was told if I wasnt in the hospital I had to come in because they couldnt find anyone.

Piss on that. Found a new job, now its all good. I take off when I want and can do it at a moments notice. Its WELL worth it.
