Can you swim with your head above water ?

I think that freestyle means you can do whatever stroke you want.
Almost everyone that swims freestyle uses the Australian Crawl, which is what rh71 is describing.

The only way to learn proper breathing technique is to practice, but if you just want to splash around in a pool or at the beach - who cares?

To race breast stroke yes you need to put your head under water to get a good stream lined position so your body doesn't block the water. However if you just want to keep your head abouve water you can do that fine, that or back stroke are your two main options. Free style will tire you out if you try to keep your head above water for a long time.

I could swim freestyle with my head above water......but it's a vast waste of energy.
