CA on the other hand, water gets down in the low 50s during the winter. Definitely wetsuit time.

in Maine the water temp is in the mid 50s in the summer, we used to swim in that all the time LOL

Not for very long I bet.

I remember surfing one day a couple years ago in December for about an hour and a half with a full wet suit (2/3 mil) without booties and my feet were completely numb by the time I got out. If you duck dived under 3-4 waves in succession you could easily get a cold headache. Water temps were around 52 degrees IIRC and the sets were easily head high that day.

as a kid i would spend hours in the water at the beach, i still do when im up there

on a really warm summer the water temp might hit 60

55F is cold enough to cause hypothermia within minutes. Either you're lying or you are a very large man.

im not lieing look it up, and no im not a "very large man"

its cold, but it wont kill you

we were there last year and the big sign said Water temp 58, it was a hot day and i was with friends who had never been there and they ran and jumped right in and then about 1/2 a send later were back on the beach, it was pretty funny actually

Swimming at Maine's ocean beaches is for the hearty. The Gulf Stream, which prods warm waters toward the Cape Cod shores to the south, veers toward Iceland south of Maine and leaves the state's 5,500-mile coastline washed by a brisk Nova Scotia current, an offshoot of the arctic Labrador current. During summer, water temperatures along the south coast may top 60°F (16°C) during an especially warm spell where water is shallow, but it's usually cooler than that. The average ocean temperature at Bar Harbor in summer is 54°F (12°C).

You can swim in the ocean in Oregon in December, so I'm going to say yes.

I lived in Miami for many years (I grew up in FL). I was a diver/windsurfer/sailor/beachgoer.

As far as being too cold, there are two to take into account:

(1) Water temp. The current off Miami is bringing water up from the equator (unlike CA where it flows down from the northern/arctic area). So, the water temp should be just fine. Really, in December the (Southern) water has not yet even had any time to really cool down.

If the water on the (Atlantic) beaches is too cool for you (unlikely). Go swim in Biscayne Bay, it'e shallower and warmer. Also note the wind. An off shore wind current (wind blowing out to sea from inland, and this is rather rare there) tends to cycle deeper cooler water from the bottom of the sea. Onshore winds do the opposite.

(2) Air temps. usually agreeable as most here note. But in rare cases it can get chilly.

Note that Floridians rarely go to the beach at that time. It's just habit/tradition. But it is the begining of tourist season, so there may still be many at teh beach.

Most people (not from Florida) find the Summer water temp too warm. They often say it's like swimming in pee. You'll prolly be fine.

Yea, buy why? The water temp off the Oregon coast on December is like high 40's to low 50's.

As a surfer you should know that is around the time of the best waves then.

I used to swim in water that cold all the time also. It's no big deal. Once you start going numb you get out.

I've jumped in the ocean on New Year's here in New York without a wet suit without any problems. Didn't stay in long and didn't stop moving, though. I've done 1.5 mile lake crossings in the winter here with a wet suit. So with the right gear and moving to generate heat you could probably handle a lot colder than you think.

Yeah bro. The wind/waves start picking up in December and just get better on through March & April.

But can reduce visibility for diving.

If it's windy, we'd go windsurfing. When calm (and therefore good visibility) we'd go diving.

I miss those days :brokenheart:

i don't want to imagine what the water temperature will be for this little man-made pond on campus, as a lot of people jump into it the Thursday before the OSU-Michigan game, being the topper for Beat Michigan Week. Last year I did it, and it was bone-numbing cold. I think the cold water from the hose used to wash off the mud from us before we entered the dorm was warmer. lmao
and ooo the warm water in the shower was never better than that night. :)

I was swimming while on vacation in February several years ago. Locals walked by wearing sweaters, "You must be from up North," they said to me. "Yeah, we're in a little better shape up North. 70 degree temperatures don't nearly kill us."
