Can you still play 1st person 3D shooters?

Ive discovered why this happens, or to me at least. Its when you take a brake for playing games for a while and your body isnt used to starring at fast moving images like an fps. You have ot keep your body in tune, if i play fps routinely a couple times a week it never phases me, but ive quit several times for 1-2months and when i come back i start to feel nautious when playing. Another theory of mine is radiation(although i have an lcd) i play 360 at my friends house from time to time and we sit 5 feet away from a 32 inch tube HDTV, and this gets me feeling the same way also, even when ive been gaming on my pc alot. I guess its really both, but give Q4 a couple more tries and you will start to get used to it very soon. My theories might be retarded as hell but this is what ive concluded over time.

It's not about FOV, it's not about being used to it, it's not about refresh rate. This is what happens to some people when they get older, period. This is from personal experience.

I play them fine, but I have heard of many people getting sick.

When I used to play flight sims (Ahhh Janes USAF was amazing) I was fine but my friends could not even watch me for more than a minute without getting extremely sick. Granted it was probably me too, inadvertanly I used to move along with the plane and the joystick, tilting my body left and right because I got so good and focused I didn't even realize I was doing it. 😉

Actually, refresh rate can have a lot to do with it. Most games will start in 60HZ and this can indeed make you sick.

I'm 32 and I still play some FPS games and I have no problems. I play @ 1600 x 1200, 100HZ on a 22" monitor though. The same game on a smaller monitor with a 60HZ refresh would make me sick..

I just reinstalled UT the other day after not playing in almost 4 years. I'm nearly 40 years old and loving it all over again. It took some getting used to a 20 inch flatscreen as opposed to the 15in CRT I had back in the day.

This happens to a buddy of mine. I think it's different if you are just watching. When you are actually playing, you are controlling the movements, so it doesn't freak out your brain as much since you are expecting the movements. When you just watch, you are getting stimulation like you are moving, but not doing anything but sitting there watching..

I'm not sure the exact process that causes this, but it's been my experience anyway..

I'm not saying refresh rate doesn't cause sickness. But people having trouble playing FPS games when they get older is an individual problem not linked to refresh rate, FOV, or any other factor but age. Believe me, I've tried it all.

Ok...that maybe be the case for some people like yourself, but that doesn't mean it's the case for everyone that is older and has problems now...

Just saying...

🙂

If I don't play for a while I find it disorients me for a bit. I'll play for 20-30 minutes and have to stop. 1-2 more play sessions though and I'm used to it.

THIS IS IT!!! and some other guy posted a similar story.

I guess I'm just out of shape, I took about a 6 year break. I'll have to go back into it slowly, little by little. And I'll start with CS:S...or BF2, been wanting to play those games ever since I saw the first emerging screen shots!!!

ahhhhhh, frag time is back!!

=P

----------

edit: I'm saying the part about taking a break is "it". I'm thinking the same now. I will certainly give it some dabs until I can test the waters of jumping back into it. Hopefully CTF is still around or will be with newer quake mods.

Hell, I'm an old fvck, and ALL I play is first-person shooters...I agree, HL@ got to me a bit at first, expecially the part on the water-bike...doesn't bother me anymore, but the first time I played...WOOHOO!

Been a video game junkie since the first Atari 2600's came out in ~1980...

Prey had me all fvcking sweaty and headachey and sh!t last night. I had to stop playing. That was on the damned gravity hopping section.

I have to agree that when you take a break, your body will have to readjust itself once you start playing again. Just go through one sitting of playing FPS for a long period of time. You'll probably get sick, but after that you'll be cured. Worked for me. Of course, frame rate and everything else other folks mention is important too. I got sick when trying out HL2... most likely cuz I was playing on a 20" LCD with < 10fps.

UMM well im 16yrs old.....and i get nautious for those reasons above. Thats from my personal experience, so dont tell me im wrong.

Edit: Also OP more evidence to backup my thoughts, my brother who doesnt even touch videogames gets nautious watching me play cs all the time. He always leaved after 20 minutes because he tells me he feels sick, also my dad watched me play BF2 once and he asked me why i dont get dizzy playing the game.

1st person shooters have always made me motionsick. I couldn't last 5 minutes with Wolf3d and Doom. Over the years I've developed little bit of tolerance and now I can last about 20 minutes before wanting to puke.

I think nextman916's explanation makes sense. I am 14 years old and play for about 6 hours a day (I love summer 😀), and I never feel sick.
