I've been mowing my lawn with a dead battery for about 6 years now. I push it out of the garage, and hook it up to a charger to get it going. Next week comes, and I hook it up again. A bit of a PITA, but it's cheaper and more ecological than buying a new battery.

Lawnmower maintenance is one of those weird things. Every time I get ready to mow my lawn I notice something needs fixing on my lawnmower:

I think "Well I could fix this correctly and turn a quick jaunt out into the yard to mow the lawn into an afternoon or more of working on the lawnmower, and then I'd still have to mow the lawn after that"...

"OR...I could rig something up right quick so I can get this hateful job over with and then conveniently forget anything is wrong with the mower".

And in this way the mower slowly dies. Eventually it'll quit and I'll buy another one, all the while complaining about how poorly things are made these days.

The belt I'm currently using is too small, so I omitted the idler pulley putting it on. Unfortunately, that makes it just a touch too big. When the deck shifts to the right, it gets too loose, and the blades barely spin. I fixed that by wiring a piece of metal to the left side, and I pull the deck over with the toe of my foot. I need to get a new belt :^D
 
I don't really feel a shock when I lick a 9 volt battery. I'd have to try with two.

With dry fingers it takes like 13 of em before I feel a shock. Oddly I will feel a 120vac shock quite well. 😛 I tried with 170ish volts worth of 9 volt batteries once. Not often you're in a situation with access to that many, so I had to try it.
 
This is a great thread. You know, you sometimes wonder about your fellow posters but when you read a thread about them licking batteries, it all comes into focus.

im assuming you mean 170ish in parallel... which is still 9v but at a few amps... which if you licked that could die.

170ish in series, giving you 1500v, even at 200ma it could easily stop your heart too.

licking a 9v battery is a pretty damn good way to tell how fresh it is. its a fairly safe practice.. 9v, few hundred miliamps across about 1/4inch of your tongue. its really not dangerous.

Oh I meant 170 volts worth of em. 13 batteries came up to around 170 if I recall. I was touching them with dry fingers and it took that many before I felt a tingle. Though when I licked my finger.. ZING, that hit hard.

Best is when working on the telco frame, if you happen to have your face squeezed on a punchdown block while reaching for a wire and a call comes in, ouch! Around 120 volts low frequency AC. :biggrin:
