I think that the trick is his optical trackball.

I tried to "cheat" the game with a touchpad with no luck.

how are you ppl getting thise 500+ scores? I'm flicking my ball mouse so fast it skips off the pad!

I don't know. I'm using Intellimouse Explorer and I easily pass 200. Can't reach higher though.
 
It's quite easy to cheat in this one. I can get over 500MPH all day. Just select the hand, drag your mouse below the applet window, move behind the monkey and then back into the applet. It seems to me I've gotten over 1000 before, but my personal best today was 802.
 
Using original Intellimouse on everglide mouse pad:

1st, 52mph, (I didn't know what I was doing)
3rd, i hit 308

Then I started to cheat:
607mph first
829mph 2nd

My monkey is now sore...
