Good Day Anadtech community:

What do you think of this?

The memory is Kyngstone KHX8500D2K2/4GR. 2 sticks 4 GB total, runs at 1.8v 800 MHZ and its advertized as 1066 memory when using 2.3v.

Anyway, previously had a 2 sticks of 800 MHZ Corsair memory for 4 GB total RAM. One of the sticks ceased to function. So i was left with one the 2 GB sticks and then added two 1 GB sticks of other Corsair memory. So resuming i had 3 sticks for 4 GB of RAM.

When i changed that to the Kyngstone memory i had a performance drop of 15 frames in Dirt 2, runing the Kyngstone´s at 800 MHZ. Rebooted the system, upped the voltage and at 1066 MHZ the performance is almost the same.

Any ideas why?

Thanks for the time.

Well for one, with three sticks you probably disabled Dual Channel performance (assuming your MB supports it).

Could also be a factor of which slots you have populated with which size stick.
For the best chance of have Dual Channel working you should have the 1 GB sticks in slot 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 (for most MB's).

Even so, I wouldn't think this would cause as big of a performance hit as what you're saying.

I think we have a confution here. The hughe performance drop came when i removed the 3 sticks and put the 2 kyngstone sticks who should be running in dual channel mode. At leat acordding to CPU Z and the boards manual.

More over, ran some benchmarks in everest and the kyngstone memory is beating the 3 Corsair sticks in every single category. I.E. the 3 Sticks gave 58 ns latency, the new ones at 1066 have 53 ns latency. So why i got 15 frames less in Dirt 2? Really perplexing :)

This got me ^

The sticks being in slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 should still apply, but I still don't think the Memory should have that big of an impact on your game - 15 FPS is a pretty good hit.

Does it matter the positions of the sticks? My boards manual says: slots 1 & 2 for Dual Channel mode, thats what i have right now with the Kyngstone memory. When i was with 3 sticks i populated the slots in 1 - 2 - 3.

at what timings are each setup running ? are they both running at 5-5-5-15 ? if not, that would explain some differences....

Seems odd, but go with what your MB says to do.
Might want to double check in case it's a misprint though . . . .

Hi mlc.

Right know i think they are at 5 5 5 18. The others might have been a little tighter but that doesnt explain a 15 FPS drop. Check what igot from everest:

Using the 3 sticks at 800 MHZ:
Read: 6361 MB Latency: 58 ns Copy: 5915 MB Write: 6470

Using 2 Kyngstone sticks at 1066 (current ones in the PC):
Read: 7867 MB Latency: 53 ns Copy: 9993 MB Write: 6741

Seems odd, but go with what your MB says to do.

How to check it? I have CPUZ and Everest and think its in DC.

most dual channel board color code the slots .. so if you have 2 stick .. put them both in the same colored slot.. to ensure they are both running in channel a or b.. You should get some sort of message during the post to state if dual channel is in use...

No, this mother board wants its memory in different colored slots. Made the switch to same colors and it wasnt running in dual channel. Even ran some benchs and therer were some throughput differences.

In my very limited PC knowledge i havent heard of anything like this before.

the original post is somewhat confusing to me..

you show 2t as the command rate with the kingston.. make sure the corsair is running at 2t as well.. if it ran at 1t, then that could explain it....

Otherwise, it would appear the board may not be running the kingston at the 1066 you think it is... Maybe you should try clearing the CMOS or updating to a newer bios , if available. to see it that helps

Well, i pulled the IDE cable of a DVD reader. When i booted the BIOS took longer than usual to upload. Ran the benchmarks and got the frames back with the Kingstone memory. This stuff keeps surprising me.

But... after the next boot the BIOS, again, took a while to upload. Ran the benchmarks and missed the frames again.

So i updated the BIOS to the latest ones and the performance went up. So far so good, hope to keep it that way.

Only downside is that now that everst doesnt report te CPU temps correctly. Seems one cant have it all.

Thanks for all the help guys! :)
