Can you Softmod a 9500NP in Windows 98?

This is my first topic here, and I'm sorry to ask another 9500 question. I looked through several pages of archives, but didn't see an answer to this particular question, so I hope some of you won't mind helping me answer it.

I run Windows 98SE (still). As far as I know, Wizzard's softmod driver only works for Win2K and XP.

If that's so, is there anyway for me, as a Win98 user, to softmod a 9500NP to a 9700? Does RivaTuner work with Win98? I haven't heard nearly as much about softmodding using RT. If it does work for 98'ers, I'd appreciate any guidance on how to use it. Is soft-modding with RivaTuner better or worse than using Wizzard's method?

What is the approximate rate of success when softmodding a 9500? I've seen estimates of anywhere from a 40 to 70% success rate.

Finally, approximately what performance advantage do you think a *typical* mod'ed and OC'd 9500 would offer over a *typical* OC'd 9600Pro? I can find a 9600P for $155 from a reputable reseller. (though I'm not entirely sure that its not a "EZ" or "Lite" version, what's the best price you all have seen?) There's a mod-able 9500 for $130. Is it worth it to get a 9600P for the guaranteed 20-30% performance improvement over a normal 9500? Or do you recommend gambling on the cheaper $130 card, perhaps ending up with stellar performance per $, and perhaps ending up eating it on a card that's only a bit cheaper than its 9600P brethren, but offers significantly less performance.

Thanks for any and all knowledge and feedback. And my apologies again if I missed something and this has been answered elsewhere. I can easily imagine that you guys get tired of newbs to the forum asking you for assistance with purchase-related information. I'd really appreciate the advice though.

Thanks for the reply LeeTJ, but that looks like a link to *this* page.

You have successfully melted my brain. Even now I'm not sure if I'm right in the above, or if I'm just crazy/stupid and the link actually works.

Thanks for the response though, please repost the link! :) ... and sorry if I missed an answer to this question in an obvious spot.

Ok, got it figured out now.

Guess this had been covered before here a few weeks ago, so I'm not surprised by the relative lack of responses. I just didn't look back far enough in the archives, and the search function didn't help too much. Anyway, sorry to have repeated.

Thanks for the intended help, Lee.
