Can you share bandwidth with a DSL connection?

without buying a router? i was hoping to get an ethernet hub and plug both of my pc's into it with the DSL and have them run like that, but i heard that it can't be done. i don't have the $200+(canadian) for a router. any suggestions?

You have to check with your dsl provider. In the US there are providers of dsl that allow you to grab as many ip addresses as you need. If you can have multiple IPs from your provider then a hub will work. If your provider only allows you one IP address, you have to go with some sort of routing be it software or hardware.

Most provider will only allow 1 IP address. You have to purchase additional if you need to but they're not gonna provide it for you. But my DSL use a Cisco modem which has a built in router so I won't have any problems if I wanna share.

If you have a computer with 98SE / ME you can do this. Have 2 network cards in the machine with 98se or ME & install ICS (internet connection sharing) Have 1 network card setup for your DSL/Cable and plug that one into the DSL/Cable box. Give your other network card an ip address of your choosing preferably 127.0.0.something with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Just search for NAT or Sygate or Wingate and you'll find a cheaper alternative. Have fun.

The dsl providers in my area allow multiple IPs to be used. Right now they say they aren't limiting them. I figured it is always worth a phone call to see if the easiest solution is possible.

Another solution, if you have an old 386 or better machine lying around, is to get 2 network cards and a copy of a disk image of linux router project. Search for "linux router project" for info. It is free, doesn't require a harddrive and gives you a dedicated gateway for your network.
