Just curious, I have a GSIII and I'm under contract with verizon. If the new <insert name of hot new phone here> comes out in January, could I sell my phone to another Verizon customer and purchase the new phone (at full price of course) and maintain my contract without getting nailed with some ridiculous ETF?

To elaborate a little... The contract is for the SERVICE. As long as you maintain the SERVICE they don't care at all about the phone. You could sell the phone, not buy a replacement, and as long as you keep paying the monthly fee for the duration of the contract, you're good.

Yes. I have been doing this for the past year.
iPhone4-Droid Charge-Galaxy Nexus-Galaxy S3.
Verizon doesn't care what phone you have, as long as you pay the bill.
