Can you run SATA II and SATA III simultaneously?

Can I run both configs off the same board?

IE, C300 SATA III boot, X25-M SATA II games?

Or must it all be one config?

Yes you could definitely run SATA II and SATA III devices simultaneously provided that you're having 2 separate partitions for each SSD instead of partitioning them together.

Thanks for the reply - that's the plan.

Crucial C300 on Intel 6Gb/s as C drive, X25-M on Intel 3gb/s as D drive.

So that should work fine?

I ask because I seem to remember reading somewhere on a forum that the SATA type had to be homogenous.

I don't think it is totally necessary to have all devices to run off SATA II or SATA III at a given time or at least that is what I know.

A rig belonging to a friend of mine which I built had a SSD plugged into the SATA III port + HDD and DVD drive plugged into the SATA II port without any problems whatsoever.

I had 2 x C300s running off of my P67's 6G Intel ICH10R ports and an Intel 120GB X25-M running off one of the 3G ports on the ICH10R and everything worked fine.


Since then I sold my Intel 120GB to a friend of mine and got myself another C300---waiting for Old Hippie to comment now..... 😉

not to try and start crap with ya Burner.. but the P67 doesn't use the ICH10R chip.

But yeah.. you can run drives off any ports you choose on those 6 series platforms and they will conform to each specific ports sata speed specs(within the limitations of the drive used of course). And if you span the 6G and 3G ports with a raid array then the 6G ports will downclock to 3G specs.

Nope, you're not. I am stuck in X58 chipset mode. Hehe. It's just the P67 chipset then.

Yeah SATA ports and drives are backwards compatible so you can run a SATA ]I[ SDD or hard drive in a SATA ][ port at obviously SATA ][ speeds and feature set.

In fact, since the P67 has 2 native SATA ]I[ 6Gbps ports I believe you can even run one SATA 3 SSD / hard drive in one port and a slower SATA 2 drive in the other SATA ]I[ port and both will function accordingly.

The first SSD / hard drive will run at SATA ]I[ speeds while the second will drop down to SATA ][ speeds even though they are both plugged into the higher speed ports.

I don't believe SATA ports function like the old IDE / ATA primary and secondary channels where the slowest device could possibly limit the entire channel.

I believe SATA ports function independently of one another.

Op, you will be fine. I currently run a sata 2 ssd and a sata 3 caviar black in my main system.
