Can you replace the Athlon 64's stock fan?

Can you replace the Athlon 64's stock fan? I dont want to replace the whole HSF, just the fan is this possible? If so what would you recomend that is best for cooling? noise is not an issue.

i dont know about just the fan. i put a thermalright xp90 on my processor and a antec blue led fan on top its looks performs great. if it turns out you can just replace the fan make sure it performs at the speed or better then the one your replacing.

You'd probably have to get a 70m to 80mm (or 120mm) adapter like these. Once you have the adapter, all you have to do is take off the four screws on the corner of the fan mounted on the stock heatsink, use them to screw the adapter onto the heatsink and then attack the larger fan to the adapter.

If noise is not an issue, I'd just get a 80mm fan with super high CFM and run it at full 12v. If you wanted to quiet it down a bit, you could always go for the 120mm and either get a fanmate or drop the fan down to 5V or 7V with a wire mod.

Why replace just the fan? Im assuming you don't need good coolign since you dn't want another heatsink. Hmm.... 40 to 80mm adapter is the best choice, with Panaflo L1A's. No need for high CFM fans if you dont need thecoling (if you did, then youwould obviously consider another heatsink)

The A64 stock HSF has a 70mm fan (or at least the one I have sitting around the house does). Why would you recommend a 40mm-80mm adapter? How are you going to attach it, since the screw holes on the heatsink are set for a 70mm fan?

I do want better cooling but I dont want to spend a lot of money on a new HSF because im not overclocking so a new HSF is pointless.

The only fan adapters I can get are like $15 CAD, combine that with a good high CFM fan and i might as well spend the extra $15 for a new HSF.

If you're not overclocking, why do you need better cooling in the first place? The A64s run pretty cool even with stock cooling and if you want to prolong the life of you chip you can enable Cool N' Quiet and download the AMD processor drivers that will turn down the voltage and clock speed on youor A64 when it is idle so it will run cooler. Even if you are running DC projects 24/7, the stock fan ought to keep the A64 well with its thermal limits.

I really think people can get a bit too obsessed with processor temps on this forum ("OMG, my Prescott is 70C!"). As long as the system is stable, then I wouldn't worry about your processor temps. Just use the stock HSF until the fan dies or gets too noisy to live with, then replace it. By then you'll probably be upgrading the processor or even the whole rig anyway.

Listen, the A64 stock HS/F is pretty good.

if your not overclocking, you dont need a better heatsink.

Unless your temps are to high which is usually because of a poorly seated hs, or hot case.
