Can you post without a processor?

So what is the bare minimum needed to POST. I'm in the process of building my first PC but it wont POST. All I get is that little green light on the mobo.

motherboard,cpu/heatsink,ram,video card/monitor & psu. that's the bare minimum

rats, i'm stumped. Any common mistakes/problems that stop the cpu/fan from kicking on (or the system from booting period). Been stuck for about 2 days now.

did you try it ouside the case?

maybe you had it shorted on something inside the case.

make sure you disconnect all case & extra fans too.

in a related matter...

I'm trying to test some lighting accessories my wife bought me along with a new case. I have the case, power supply, and motherboard hooked up, and I'm trying to just attach those lights (lit fan, laser light, cathode light) to the power chords coming out of the power supply to test them, but the power supply isn't coming on at all....

is it the same kind of deal? will I need the CPU and memory also installed to even test those lights?

Make sure the ATX power switch lead from your case power on button is connected to your motherboard correctly. I recently built a computer where the motherboard manual listed the connection location incorrectly. The computer would not POST. The only thing that was on was that little green light until I figured out the correct location of the ATX power on switch.

On mine when I tried that it would power up still not POST then power off.

assumming this post was directed at my question....I don't want to test the power supply, I'm trying to test the lights. the reason is that they are 7-day return-for-cash and 30-day return-for-credit policy. I don't have my video card for my new system yet, so I'm wondering how I can test these w/ just power supply...?

No, you need to have the front ATX power switch connected. Either that, or you can short the two pins that the switch lead connects to with a screwdriver or something to turn the system on.

Switching on the PSU won't power up the system.

Do you happen to be using a low speed HSF? Just recently, I tried to change to a low speed fan and I could not get the computer to boot since the MOBO wouldn't boot unless it sensed a certain RPM of the HSF.

Just a thought.

I have all this and mine won't POST...

Why so many notes when the answer was given in the first reply? "No!"

The PSU isn't kicking out of stand-by. Green light = 5v 720mA* waiting current detected. Red light = full system power (once that is on, it's a good chance all your fans and doo-dads will be running too. So it's possible that either, 1) your case's front-panel wiring is faulty; 2) the power button connectors are not connected to the correct leads on the front-panel IO header on your motherboard (check documentation 3 times); or...

* 3), the PSU 5v stand-by power isn't providing the necessary 720mA current capacity and that may be causing the failure to kick out of stand-by.
