Can you play online co-op without XBL Gold?

My buddy is just getting an Xbox and most likely won't be playing online multiplayer. We will definitely be playing MW3 Spec Ops and co-op in general. I know you need XBL Gold for Netflix, but do you need it to play online *period*?

Just wondering if he can skip the Gold and still play online co-op. Thanks guys
 
Just to be clear (because I just realized the question in the title and the paragraph are different) you need to sign-up for XBL Gold to play online period whether it is multiplayer or co-op plus use Netflix, ESPN, etc.

The only activities you can do without Gold are download demos, purchase XBL games, purchase movies, text message friends and some other stuff.
 
Yes you need XBL to play any kind of multiplayer. There is no distinction between co-op or VS multiplayer. The only way around it would be to use some kind of system-link virtual lan over the internet.
 
Gotcha. That's what I was wondering. Thanks for the clarity guys: he needs XBL Gold for us to play online period, multiplayer or not.
 
hey at least right now they have a special on the dashboard 3months of gold for only $12.50 ive never seen it that cheap before and i jumped on that deal this morning
 
Yeah, I'm good through like Feb 2012 so I won't jump on this one, but it is very good. Every 3-4 months you can usually snag a 12 month alone for $40, so this plus the extras is very hot.
 
that's a sweet deal. 43 bucks minus $5 for the points card, and the non-knockoff chatpad and headset should be worth at least 15 more. that's about 2 bucks a month for xbox live if you either need/want the extras or resell them on fleabay.

edit: also i saw on the dash that you can add a month to your subscription for like a dollar. only catch is not to let it autorenew, or it does so at a shitty rate.

also i wish i had cash so i could make silly little 'investments' like this. fwiw you could probably resell those kits for 55 or more together or 60 plus if you split them up. buy in bulk, dutch auction and profit.
