i dont have a dvd and have never fooled around much, but can you watch video clips that you burn with a dvd-r or whatever on a regular dvd player (like one you hook up to your tv)? if so, what kind of file format would you have to burn them in?

It depends on your DVD PLAYER (prefer to the manual, duh)
My DVD player can't play any copied disc.

Depends on the type of disc you use and the formats that your player will recognize. Most players will read mpegs and vcds. Some do svcd now but that's about it. They will not do avi or divX movies.
