I recently sold a Toshiba cable modem to a member here on the forums. The modem was missing the sticker which has the serial number and mac address (the buyer was aware of this at time of purchase, that is how I purchased it awhile back).

I didnt have any trouble plugging it in and using it with my cable provider (Adelphia), but apparently its an issue with the buyers cable provider (Cox).

Is there any way to obtain the serial number and mac addy?

Actaully, most cable modems DO have an internal page with diagnostic information (signal levels, MAC, etc.)

With the PC hooked to the modem open a browser and go to http://192.168.100.1 (the modem should hand out an IP from 192.168.100.0/24 via DHCP even if not on the cable plant). You are looking for the HFC MAC or "Cable" MAC.

I've never done this with a Toshiba, but for 99% of DOCSIS modems this is true.

Most Toshiba Cable modems will assign the PC a 192.168.100.11 address and take the 192.168.100.1 address. You can simply connect the PC to the cable modem and drop to a dos box and type in

C:\>ARP -A

this will give you the Mac Address of the cable modem

foxkm -

I beleive that your instructions would give the MAC Address of the ethernet port on the modem. This is not what the cable co needs - they need the Cable/HFC (hybrid fiber-coaxial) MAC for provisioning purposes.

Also, you just need the MAC, make something up for a serial number if they force you to give one.
