Can you negotiate a price with a furniture store?

Looking at buying a couch/loveseat or couch/recliner and was wondering if and how much you could haggle on the price. Probably going to Slumberland (since they have 1 year no interest financing).

Just wondering what other people's experience is. Can you only talk them into free delivery? Is it easy to get $100 off a $1500 purchase?

Let's put it this way: it doesn't hurt to try.

If it's a privately owned store your chances are better.

you can negotiate, but my experience has shown that they never honor such requests.

Well not everything, at least not where you actually get a discount, but I've always been able to get a discount on furniture.

I do it at Lowes all the time and usually save tons of cash that way. ;) I think the dept leaders like to show their authority and override prices just cause they can.

Do you pay with cash or credit?

Hey you can always try. Even "non negotiable" items usually are. You just need to know what you're doing :D

Usually cash.
I don't think it would make much difference though.

The only time I had someone refuse what I offered was Room to Go when I was shopping for a spare bedroom. I just walked out.

Yes you can. They generally have a "code" to show how low they can go on a certain item. If you see a long number on the price tag that doesn't make sense to you, odds are that's what shows the salesperson how much they can haggle.

At least that's how it was done in a furniture store some people close to me worked in.
