It would probably involve alot of cash up front (rebates), there aren't super hot deals everyday (meaning that have a high resale).

No, you can't make a living doing that. You might be able to make a few extra bucks a month, but that's it. To make a living doing it, you'd have to be able to buy big quantities of the big sale items (most retailers limit you to one), and forget about rebates because those are always limited to one.

There's no way to pick up the quantities needed to be able to make a living at it.

A couple of years ago it might have been possible. Not only were a lot of startup retailers giving huge discounts (Value America, Mercata, Accompany/Mobshop, etc.) with promotions, but a lot of bidders on eBay weren't exactly smart consumers. Not possible now, I think.
