Can you make a "backup" of a DVD w/ a DVD-Burner? (like the PIONEER A03)

most DVD are double layered. Current DVD-R only writes to one layer. Max capacity of a DVD is 2 layers, 2 sides. That would equal ~ 17.4 Gb.

Cool, though I've never seen 17gig blanks DVD being sold anywhere.

I think they only 4gig & 9gig DVDs to stop pirate copies of DVD movies being made.

They don't sell 17GB DVD-R because the burners can only write to a single layer, like Adul said... 4 and 9GB blanks are single layer. (the 9GB one is double sided)

Most movies are single sided, dual layered, so you can't back them up entirely.

Probably not worth it. Unless a DVD burner burns dual layers, if you back up a movie, you'd stop around where most low end players pause to switch layers.

actually, there are nifty (albeit difficult to learn) programs, such as IfoEdit, that make burning a movie to a 4.7GB blank easier...normally only movies less than 120mins can fit on a DVD, if you notice the VOB's are absurdly large, you can "rip" out additional audio tracks (who needs a french and spanish dub anyway), and with a few more processes you can create all files required to burn the movie to the disc (usually missing such things like the menu, deleted scenes, etc) with a program such as neoDVD (this has on average yielded the best result for me, though it has more than occasionally had it's share of random crashes while burning to "expensive" $3 media)
