From what i know having a power supply that is too small would usually just cause system instability, although a poorly designed unit ciould overload itself and melt down (from what I've known and seen with other PS type things)...

I bet yours is a bit too far on the small side for anyone to consider anyway. Pick up a 300W to be sure and you'll be happy.

Hey, you actually a big guy? We should have a weight contest and see who is the largest and most beefy geek among us. :) I'm 230 lbs!

Edit: And it's all muscle, damnit!

not quite the 200lb yet but beefy nontheless
there were no obvious signs of meltdown
just nothing at all
the vendor has told me its my fault but i dont believe him

All power supplies are not created equal. Power Supplie ratings mean almost nothing. The 200 watt rating is made up over +3.3v +5v and +12v as the main power consuming voltages. The split between the voltages is quite important for AMD systems. The combined rating of +5v and +3.3 is crtical (AMD specs 145watts).

Over-voltage and over-current protection and regulation is one part of Power Supply design that can be left out to reduce cost.

I killed my 235w Enlight PSU, with a Duron@900. It was just the fuse that blew, so it only set me back 1$.

I've had the atx switch go bad - can use a jumper to start the computer - slip on slip off!

max watt dissipation for a duron 800 is 34W. your duron leaves a lot over...
i'm running a PII on 150W nuff said!

Check the voltages for droops because if any of the positive voltages except +12V droop by more than 3% or the +12V droops over 5-6%, the supply is being overloaded. Supplies normally don't suffer damage if overloaded for a while with a high-power CPU and hard drives, but don't count on any short circuit protection to work because it often fails even in quality supplies, including PC Power & Cooling, Sparkle, Astec, Antec, EnerMax, and IBM. OTOH I have a certain brand of cheap, non-UL supplies with misspelled warning labels ("Varnin: Hazazdous Voltage") where the protection seems bulletproof.

Power supply ratings are not always accurate. I've seen some cheap 250W units droop or shut down with equipment that my old 130W IBM handled just fine.

Well if you experience that then maybe an upgrade to a 300Watt PSU is in order! I am runing a classic Athlon and Asus K7M with 250 Watts and everything seems to be running smoothly! Go for a 300Watter...

Good Luck,

Albert.

Not sure about 90watt supplies but HP sells pretty loaded Athlon systems with 185 watts supplies. Whats the trick, only 4 amps on the +12v. Most PS's provide way too much power on the +12v (upto 12 amps on some 300 watt supplies). If your not using 10 case fans or a peltier, thats about 100 watts of your total pretty much wasted.

I bought my Athlon system 16 months ago, and have made a few additions since then, Check my sig to see what im running. Ive found a good deal on a SlotA 900 or 1000, but thats a power beast compared to what ive got, and im running a 235w Sparkle. So i emailed the company and asked them what they thought, should i also be upgrading the PSU, and they reckoned yes id need a new PSU, at least a 250w but very preferably to get a 300w, so ive decided to just go and get a decent PSU. I live in the UK, which is a bit crappy for getting decent hardware such as 'high spec'(read: not generic, hehe ) PSU's, but i think ive settled on getting the dual fan 330w Enermax as it seems readily available online in the UK. Even though it is £49 (see how much we have to pay!! hehe, $75 my ass - you yanks would get it in a CASE for that:p), i still think its a far better investment than getting some crappy thing for £30 which just aint gonna cut it down the line.
Im also planning on a few future additions other than the new Athlon, such as another HD, NV20, so im thinking that ill definately be needing MORE POWER:)
