Can you just call a psycholigist and make an appointment?

I think you can probably call a psychologist and get an appointment. You might need to be referred to a psychiatrist.

I think the only practical difference is that a psychiratrist can prescribe medication, and a psychologist cannot.

I think you need a referral if you have insurance, or if the office is particularly busy, but otherwise, I don't think you would.

And Maul, like I could hide that fact? ;)

A psychiatrist is an MD who went to medical school, internship, residency, speciality, etc.

A psychologist is a PhD usually in psychology.

There is a real sign!(*writes something down in little notebook*)

Oh, did you ever pay for the damage you did in Toys R Us? That wasn't very nice what you did...

Does insurance usually cover your costs for going to a psychiatrist/psycholigist? That's what I'm kinda worried about too.

It depends on who yer insurance company is. You'll have to call and ask.

Yes counseling is usually covered but I think you hafta get authorized with them first and then usually there's a "co-pay" fee per session, like $10-20.

Best of luck!

If you go to a psychiatrist your insurance premiums will SKYROCKET if you don't have a mental health waiver. I got dropped by my insurance company and had to go on really really expensive Blue Cross ins. as a result. Definitely check with your insurance company and make sure it won't affect your policy at all.

If your insurance is through an HMO like mine, it would also be a good idea to make sure whoever you visit is on their plan.

if your having say girlfriend or work problems I doubt it will be covered or if it is your fees will go up. But if you have a serious problem like went to the doctor and he referred you then it should be covered. Typical co-pay is $15.

Call your insurance company. My mom used to go to the shrink when the state covered her fees but then they stopped paying and she slowly stopped going because it got to be so $$$.
