Can you implement Raid 1 non-destructively?

I have a lot of stuff on my storage HD and with all the drives dying these days I feel like I need to back them up.

I have too much stuff to back up on to CD's, so here's the question:

My MB has a HPT370 raid controller built in, if I where to get another matching drive to the one i'm using for stoage now (WD 600BB) would I have to reformat and use the HPT bios to create a mirroring setup? Or would it just copy all the stuff to the new HD and start doing raid 1?

I hope not.

You have 2 options...

Software raid where the OS controls the entire mirror setup.
or
Use the highpoint onboard controller to control the raid operation, if you go this way get the manual for that controller. In the manual you will/should find the instructions for creating a mirror without destroying the existing data on the main drive. The .pdf manual for your motherboard may also have a small section about using your onboard controller.
