Can you honestly live without a dishwasher?

I probably could, but, I hate washing dishes. Yet, I pretty much do anyway-- I prewash before putting in the dishwasher. If I don't, food sticks on the forks and some plates and ends up getting baked on in the drying time (even w/o heated dry on). So, then it's harder to clean those items afterwards. Happens with cheesey foods mostly, but, could be anything.

This is a new house with a GE dishwasher that was brand new (now 1yr old). Using Cascade detergent and JetWash drying stuff.

So, any tricks to getting stuff to clean properly w/o prewashing.

Avoid GE dishwashers in the future. They suck. Meanwhile, make sure the water-heat option is ON, and let the water run at the faucet nearest to the DW until the water flows HOT before you start it. Also, look in the bottom of the DW compartment, and make sure there isn't a screen that's blocked with crud.

Didn't have a choice. Came w/ the house... credit wouldn't have amounted to anything.

Other things are good, you mentioned, guess it's just the 'suck' part.

Yeah, I got that from your last post. I think the contractors like GE dishwashers because they can get them for cheap.

I thought of one more thing: the spray arms of many dishwashers are easily removeable, usually just by turning a plastic wing-nut in the center. Take those out and "backflush" them in the laundry tub or outside with the hose. Food might be blocking some of the spray holes.

As for dishwashers that don't suck, the Kenmore Ultrawash line works great for the money you pay IMHO. You can get a great working new lower-end Ultrawash for under $400, if you're at your wits end, but money is a concern.

I have a GE dishwasher that is 11 years old. The only part that I had to replace was the cap for the detergent - and it replaced it myself. It has been a great product. Then again, it was their top of the line model (digital readout, digital push buttons, etc.) and it came new with the house when we bought it.
