Can you have multiple antivirus programs installed?

I know it is not wise to have multiple antivirus programs installed at the same time because they will conflict with each other.

But is it okay if I disable live/active protection and just use the other antiviruses as a backup on-demand scanner?

I ask this question because I commonly connect peoples HDs to my PC and run virus/spyware/adware scanners on them from my PC.

So.... Could I have Norton Corporate installed and have protection enabled. And then have AOL free (Kaspersky) and bitdefender8 (free) installed but have live protection disabled and remove it from the startup? Or will my PC suffer somehow?

Thanks!

You should only have one AV installed. AOL Kaspersky is superior to all of the others that you listed anyhow, and it's the only one that you should install. 🙂

If you can make sure the scanners don't run anything in the background, then it's fine. Don't know how easy that will be with Norton.

I know Kaspersky is great. But it isnt a silver bullet. I have notron pick up stuff Kaspersky doesnt. And I have bitdefender pickup stuff both of them didnt find.

I know you can with kaspersky, not sure with bitdefender. Ill leave norton as my main AV because it might get pissed off if i turn off protection.

i got 2 pc's....
on pc-1 i have: Free AVG + Free AntiVir (manual scan only).
on pc-2 i have: Free Avast + Free BitDefender (manual sca only).

installation and configuration was simple.... i just had to de-activate on-demand scanning on the each secondary AV.

I just installed Kaspersky. Everytime it would boot into windows it would hardrestart it self. So I went into safe mode and disabled start when windows starts and disabled active monitoring. Now it works great. I think ill install BitDefender and AntiVir next.

That didnt work so well... After restart I couldnt launch bitdefender from within safe mode. PC kept restarting after logging in. I couldnt uninstall it from safe mode. And even though its removed from startup it still kept on restarting my PC. I had to restore from ghost when I did a clean install of XP. Had to start all over again. This time Im going to install kaspersky and bitdefender first. then ghost it. Then install norton 🙂

see bold - WHY?

see bold - WHY?

Because alot of systems that I get to repair are so infected with ****** that half the time it doesnt start up. And if it does - it goes 1/2 MPH. Also there is that problem that the virus/spyware/adware cant be removed because it is currently in use/ in memory. So when i connect the HD to my PC I can scan it and remove alot of the crap. Then Ill go in and be able to actully use their PC and install tools to remove the stuff that the external scan missed.

High risk - IMHO
How is it a "risk"? Its just like having multiple spyware removers installed - just with protection enabled.

Yeah I was going to do that. But I only have a 160GB HD and i need as much space as possible to back up peoples HDs with Ghost incase I break it and i need to restore.

i am curious, how would insatlling it on different partitions fix anything?
doesnt it still run on 1 OS which is installed...for example on C drive?

the anti virus programs installed on separate partitions obviously don't conflict with each others' installations. Only one is actually running ... the other 'waits' until you need it to scan all drives

anyway it worked for me

I have used both(AOL version is on my backup PC) above, they are very good but my favourite at the moment is Bitdefender 10 Plus, don't pay too much attention to AV table listings since Kaspersky does not win them all, infact I have seen one few months back where Kaspersky finished 5th.

Getting back on topic you should just install one good AV program and use a free online scanner for backup/checking.

I like the low memory usage of BD10+ ,also Bitdefender awhile back got rid of one trojan I had that Kaspersky could not ( 6 months ago).

Btw I normally leave real timer scanner on,easy to disable for gaming etc... if you need too, dual core CPU helps a lot in these situations.

what if i have several AV's (NOD32+kaspersky+Avast) installed, but only AVG is set to monitor in real time

would that cause any troubles if they are all installed on same hard drive that doesnt have any partitions to it?

i can only speak from my experience

the scanners don't play 'nice' with each other .... they often use the same resources but tend to configure them differently .... i've had 'conflicts'

the best suggestion [which i do now] is to have a full-time scanner and an online one

if you 'need' more for special purposes, installing them on separate partitions insures they will coexist nicely

good luck with what you are planning to do ... lt us know if you are successful with everything on one partition

so if i want to have 4 partitions (1for OS + 1 for NOD32, 1 for Avast and 1 for Kaspersky) can each partition be like 100MB in size? since AV's dont need more than that and space is issue.

or does each have to be like minimum amount of HDD space?

Here's a hint for Bitdefender free:
click start -> run -> type "services.msc"
You should see 2 services for bitdefender, click properties, then disable

This way it will not run in the background when you start windows. When you want to do the scan, just reverse the process.

I do it to cut down on resource usage, but for multiple anti-virus installations it makes sense to me

that's what i do too. i have Free Avast as the main AV and BitDefender for manual scans only. never a conflict.
