Not a basic one like "how to set up your office network", etc. What I'm interested in is one that covers the various physical layers and how they communicate with each other, (routing, gateways, blah, blah), and some good primer on WAN. Administrator level, although not TOO obtuse, but something in-between "dummies" and "gurus". I'm past the dummy stage, but nowhere near the guru stage.:D

Thanks!

If you want a good book focusing on TCP/IP look for "Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Douglas E. Comer. It's a big yellow book and can be considered the bible of TCP/IP. The second book I am going though is the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammle. This thing is recommended by anyone who has ever taken the CCNA Exam, and from what I've read so far, I can easily recommend it too.

Take a look at TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1. It is the bible for TCP/IP. Volume 1 is the protocols. Volume 2 is the implementation and is really targeted at programmers.

As a good primer, though UNIX oriented, O'Reilly's TCP/IP Network Administration is a good book as well. However so is Comer's book. Never read his book, but I'ver looked it over.

A great book on routing, though Cisco oriented, is Routing TCP/IP by Jeff Doyle. It's part of the Cisco Professional Development series. Great book though.

The obtuse stuff would be something like Sam Halabi's Internetwork Routing Architectures. Pretty much considered THE book on implementing BGP4. So you can probably skip that one. :)

R0b, that CCNA book is very good. I have it myself, quite helpful for the certification exam.

I also have the TCP/IP from IDG (I think? can't find it, grr!) and Networking Essentials form New Riders. But those are more for the exams, I'm assuming that's not what you want?
