Can you guys recommend a good digital camera?

I hope this is not off topic but...

Well, I'm going to college this fall and I want to get a fairly good digital camera to take with me down there. I'm going to San Diego to play baseball, and since my dad cant make my games as its a six hour+ drive from the bay area, I wanted to use this camera to kinda document my baseball season and send him pictures. Not to mention its just a great thing to have around the apartment... never know when we might need to snap off some pics 😀 hehe...

Ok, so my budget is fairly tight.

$400 or less... is that too little for a good camera?

Let me know! Thanks!

Imho, the Canon S400 is the best camera in that price range. Not only does it take excellent quality pics, but it's quite small. Since it fits easily in my pocket, I take it everywhere!

Thanks for the replies, the A70 looks pretty good.

Any problems with digital cameras I should know about, any drawbacks?

I see the A70 has USB connectivity, any compatibility issues I should know about?

Any other brands that are good?

Got a USB port on a machine running a fairly new OS? If so, you should have no USB issues.

Digital drawbacks? Pictures tend to be noisy over ISO 100 and tend to have trouble in low-light conditions with little or no flash. You should have no problem taking pictures outside during the day.

It's a good camera - but like many Sony products has some proprietary wrinkles. Stick to Canon and Compact Flash modules. I had 5 Olys - and now a Canon D60. I don't look back. 🙂

Is the Sony memory inferior to compact flash? HArder to obtain? More expensive?

Go here: Steve's DigiCams

Well written reviews on just about every digital camera around. Each review has pictures of the camera in question from just about every angle as well as photos you can view taken with each camera.

I just got a Casio EXILIM EX-Z3 for my son. $400. It is a really great camera. You can see a review here
Review at dpreviews

It is almost the smallest 3.1 Mpixel camera available. It is the size of a very thick credit card. 3.4 x 2.6 x 0.9 in. It is very fast and responsive.

Not necessarily - it's just another damned format to have to deal with. But - that is typical Sony. I'll always remember betamax.

I'm a Canon fan myself. I have used several of their cameras with great results every time. Their automatic settings get great results IMO

Hummph...

The Canon POwerShot A70 and the Sony Cybershot DSC-p72 got basically the same reviews on Steve's Digicams and both are very similarly priced with the Canon about $15 cheaper after shipping.

So what's the REAL diff? $15? or is there something one has the other doesnt that I am overlooking?

i recommend a g2, or something with a fast lense. the f2.0 lense on the g2 will really help in capturing action at night - 2x faster shutter speeds than a f2.8 lense that is found on the s400, a70, and pretty much any other [smaller] camera.
