About the memory I chose, it says "Memory QVL TABLE" on the motherboard web site (see url above). And the kingston chip I chose is listed on that table. Does that table list memory that IS or ISNT compatible? What does the QVL stand for? I don't know.

In other words? Is the memory compatible? Is this a good setup? It's less than $500, everything but monitor.

Case/PS - don't know which case or PS that is. DO NOT skimp on the PS; it's the most important thing in the system! Crappy PS=probs for you later

Mobo - great

CPU - great

Memory - not sure. Kingston makes some good stuff and some crap. Don't get their "value" line memory. I'd buy some Crucial, if I was you. Besides, if you're not overclocking, you don't need PC3200 memory; you can use PC2100, which is much cheaper. Allthough PC3200 would future-proof you a bit. 🙂

Videocard - fine for the purposes you describe

HD - great, but why only 40GB? 60 and even 80GB are not that much more expensive

CDRW - good. No DVD rom? Don't need it, but w/o a second drive you can't do drive-to-drive copies.

The powersupply comes with an affordable case. If I have any problems, I could always get a different PS (its cheap).

As for the memory... Do you know if that table on the Asus web site are ones that ARE or ARENT compatible?

QVL = Qualified Vendor List, I think.

The list indicates RAM that WORKS with the motherboard.

Your component selection seems fine.

Yes, you can get a different cheap PS, if ONLY the PSU dies on you. I've read/heard of many cases when the PS takes down the other components (mobo, CPU etc) too when it dies a spectacular death. So DO NOT skimp on the PSU!!

I suggest going a notch higher and get the Barton 2500+, and get PC2700 RAM from Crucial or any other reputable company as suggested. Flaky RAM = unstable system. You have been warned!

Other stuff looks peachy.. good luck! 🙂

Ok here's the power supply. Could you tell me if it's a good one or no?

I know it's not a popular brand, but will my system be ok with it?

Okia Power Supply (scroll down a bit): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3428207772&category=44944&rd=1[/q

Okay, first please link your stuff. Second, I think for you it would be better if you got a Channel Well PSU, they're cheap and reliable for your kind of setup. Also do NOT buy your parts off ebay.

get a bigger harddrive, I think 80 gig is value for money now...
Get a dvd/cdrw combo drive for about $20- $25 more...
definitely get a better psu: antec, thermaltake, etc...
I agree with the earlier post, it's the most 'important' part of the system

How does this complete system sound all from Newegg. I've had this board since May running XP1700 @ 166fsb=1.83 GHz with no problems at all, very stable. XP1800 @ 166 would give 1.9 Ghz, almost XP2400 speed 1.93, board also supports Barton core for future upgrades. Just set the fsb jumper on the board to 166 when you set it up.
