I think I'm one of the FEW ATOT Mariah Carey fans here. The other day I started a thread about her upcoming album, and with quite a few pics.

My main question is, what do a lot of people have against Mariah? And, why does a thread about her have turn into a "She'z a Hoe"fest?

i don't know,

but i do believe that much of her popularity was due to her former husband. she's ok, but she isn't as good as all that, in my opinion.

Yea, I guess being married to the most powerful person in the recording industry (Tommy Mottola) does kinda give you an edge over everyone else. But, she has sold over 140 million albums and singles world wide, so it can't all be Tommy, right? That's more than any other artist in ALL of time.

I don't know what happened to her, she started off with a nice career and was a classy lady. Then she divorced her husband and starting hanging around with a different crowd. Now she has psychological problems. I think she tossed her brilliant career into the toilet.

Ah, but she has been hanging around with rappers since 1993, during her Music Box album. She even rapped on her debut album....

She worked with Jermain Dupri beck then, and she worked with Puff Daddy in 1995 - when he was just Sean Combs and a relative unknown in the music industry.

to be honest, in my opinion, it could all be him.

face it, talent is EASY to find. it isn't talent that creates success, but marketing. He was the marketing tool that allowed her to get where she is.

her voice is awesome. she has an awesome range.

i, along with many many people, had issues with her look. she was showing as much skin as possible, at all times. it was just... gross to see. it didn't match with her previous image which was probably crafted by mottola. she said she was being forced to be someone she wasn't under mottola and had to break out, as seen with "honey" when she was just... um... yeah

i didn't like her foray into more hip-hopish kind of music. it just didn't work with her voice. she has such awesome range and she did seem to sell a lot better when she wasn't trying for that kind of image. her album sales have been slipping and glitter was a complete washout.

now with the way she dressed to sing the national anthem at the super bowl... you know covering everything up... was appropriate and may start to win her fans back who felt alientated by her hip hop transgression. who knows?

she's not terrible looking, but she sure has been flaunting herself since the divcorce of her husband. She now sings (if that's what you call it) with Puff Daddy, Bone Thugs (song is Breakdown....and AMAZING song at that!), and some other rappers (like that video with ludacris where she's in a drag race or something).

I dunno...perception is reality, or whatever the quote is.

I'm just not generally a fan of hip-hop, which she seems to be moving into. I don't mind some of her older stuff.

You could call me indifferent to her.

I miss the old Mariah. The puffy haired Mariah that sang on MTV Unplugged. Still love that CD :)

Well I have a guestion too. It's what do you mean by a serious comment. I don't know who Maria Carey is. Oh, I know she sings. At least I think she's a singer. But I don't know what she sings and I don't know anything about her life, and I know that part of the reason is that, on the one hand such things are of no interest to me, and on the other that part of the reason they are of no interest to me is because my life is far more interesting to me than hers or any other singer, performer, or so called famous person. Not the reason I feel this way is, in my opinion, because I am a serious person. And part of what happened on the way to becomming serious was that I lost all interest in wanting to belong to anything. I have no team, no society, no social grouping, no race, no religion, no nation, no nothing to which I attach myself for the comfort of belonging and drawing a source of identity. Being serious caused all that to be completely empty for me.

So when you ask a question like why do people disrespect a famous, in some cases former, idol, and at the same time ask for serious answers, well, what can I tell you. I know the answer, but I don't really think you were looking for an answer. I think you were looking for a way to preserve and protect or defend something you have identified with. If people don't like Maria Carey, maybe they don't like you. Maybe there is something wrong with you. Maybe you need to get your identifications in order so you can fit in and be normal, get the proper back slapping, or get everybody else to join your team. It's all the same.

So the serious answer to your question, and the one I know you weren't looking for, is that people identify. They are sheep, as we like to say. Why? The answer is that we feel bad about ourselves. We feel worthless. But we don't know that, and we don't want to know that. Se we identify with somebody or something around us that is getting praise, love, affermation, all the things we are dying for inside, but feel we are too worthless to deserve. In this way we become vacarious beings with no life of our own. We become the team member, the great group member, one of the best race, one from the best nation, etc. We try to fill our emptiness with externals.

But when an idol falls from power, we, many of us, turn against it. Our hate for ourselves now comes out against the fallen idol. You worthless piece of crap, you failed me as a substitute for self love.

Now from the above serious words you can build a picture of the entire sleeping world if you choose to, but I know what will really happen. I've been serious for a while now.

I don't really feel that there are any female artists worth listening to, doesn't matter who. (I'm not sexist or anything, chick music just sucks!)

...Were you talking?... ;)

but seriously I agree to some degree...

I have to admit that alignment with idols or ideals is human nature at some level... perhaps we may consider it "Monkey nature"... that being said. I am not disgusted or upset when "monkeys" are "monkeys". I am of course overjoyed when they turn out to be Buddhas ;):D

It's just the image that she's been carrying herself into nowadays that makes me not like her anymore. She seems to be gaining more weight and getting sluttier. I think she should go back to her older conservative self. She's a good singer, which I have no doubts, but just what she sings and how she does it nowadays is very different than what it used to be.

After the crap thats been in the media for the last year, about her losing her mind, and her rants about other singers in the public eye, as well as her neurotic rants on her fanphone(that Howard Stern played publicly) then her crying of how her record wasnt being promoted to the best of the abilities of her record company at the time, She's become another psychotic washout. She needs to get her head out of her ass before she completely ruins what little of a career she has left. She may have a great voice, as most people will tell you, a great voice doesnt sell any records without marketable material to sing. Just ask George Michaels.

Bleah.
