Can you go from NTFS to FAT32 in Win2k with Partition Magic 5.01?

I don't like NTFS! My hard drive is always accessing and my machines seems less responsive. Will PM 5.01 change it back?

The Acrobat Reader manual for PM5.01 and it says that you can convert, but it says that "you will loose file-specific information when converting"

WTF is that?

Not precisely on-topic, but I was wondering what your cluster sizes in NTFS are? I originally installed by letting the setup program do the formatting of my NTFS partition, so I wound up with 512 byte clusters. I've since blown it away, booted into a different W2K partition, formatted with 4096 byte clusters, then installed to the pre-formatted partition. Improved startup times and reduced disk thrashing on this notebook computer by an appreciable margin.

Regards,
Jim

BTW, if you do the NTFS5 to FAT32 conversion, would you mind telling us how it went? Always nice to know stuff like this!

Yeah, this was formatted with the Win2k installtion program. I'm gonna wait for my friend across the hall to come back so that I can make some rescue disks for PM

Hmmm, PM5.01 had the NTFS to FAT32 option greyed out :(

How do you change the cluster size?

oh yeah, lemme know if it works. I had to fvcking reformat so I could go to fat32 to setup win98 on a dual boot. I never bothered to try and convert the partition...figured it was about time for a reformat anyway. :)

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about PM 5.01 except how to spell it!

And the only way I know of to change cluster sizes in an established NTFS partition is to reformat it!

If you have heavy time and effort into your installation, maybe you could ghost the install to somewhere else, perform the format, then restore the ghost?

I always just do stuff the hard way. That's probably because my alleged brain imagines that I've learned enough in the interim to make my next installation just that much better.

Jim

i have partition magic 5.0 but it doesn't run on w2k. IS there a patch to upgrade to 5.01 or something?

Davegod75,

Look at the English version updates page for Partition Magic. (Forgive me the assumption.) Appears to be a specific version for W2K Pro.

Looks like the "patch" is 30 MB! :Q Hope you have broadband connection, or a lot of patience!

I had heard, but do not have experience, that the updatee is DEFINITELY needed for use with W2K. But then again, you do hear dire storeies about everything these days.

Happy downloading!

Regards,
Jim

NFS4:
This may or may not help: I initially installed W2K with fat32, and them changed to NTFS by re-installing W2K on top of itself, choosing NTFS as the file system. I suffered no data loss. Is it possible to revert to fat32 by the same process? I don't know. Is it worth a try? Your call.

edit: Doh! By the time I got to the bottom of the thread I had forgotten the last part of the topic title. Bad sign!

Now, NFS4, why aren't you looking through the paper manual? Hmmm...? ;)

I didn't see anything in that manual either.

PM 5.0 works to a certain extent when converting win2k to NTFS. I've tried it. After converting, it says something about the boot partition being damaged. All wasn't lost, though, as I popped in win2k cd and rebuilt the boot partition. Everything worked fine.
With 5.01, I didn't have any problems converting fat32 to ntfs. I think I converted ntfs back to fat32 on an empty partition before. But then again, maybe I just reformated that partition?
I like the ghosting idea. I wish I had lotsa empty HD space to do that.

Does anyone know how Paragon's Partition Manager converts the partition? Do you select the changes, and are they applied after a reboot in dos? Or do they take place in Windows 2000? This information is vital, because I am running an IDE RAID Array (Promise FastTrack100) and it doesnt like DOS disk utilities. I would be dissapointed to buy this program and find out that it doesnt work for me. Any help would be appreciated.

I have Partition Magic 6, and it does convert NTFS -> FAT32. You will loose NTFS-specific info, though (certain security settings, etc.)
